It is Saturday morning – 6AM. Only one place to find Jason – Right in front of the TV, snuggled in a blanket with nothing on but his UnderRoos armed with a bowl of Coco Puffs! Saturday morning cartoons are classic. Dave loves cartoons as well – but only the ones that started 10:00 or later…
Welcome millions upon millions, perhaps billions, of faithful podcast listeners. We are your hosts, Jason Kimber and Dave Simmons. We'll bring you along with us as we share life stories from our experiences living in small towns, or in Jason's case, an unincorporated community.
SPEAKER_00That's true.
SPEAKER_01Along with genius suggestions for solving world problems and a whole lot of laughs. This is the Small Towns Podcast. Welcome back to another episode of Small Towns Podcast. I'm Jason Kimber. Of course, always with me, Dave Simmons. Dave, how are you doing? Very well. How are you doing?
SPEAKER_00Well, I'm doing great. You look great. I feel great. Although I we're uh smacking the heart of our spring, and old Mother Nature messed with my head a few weeks ago. Without question, to wake up to like a couple two, three inches of snow. Well, so like what, a couple weeks ago? Short short sleeves on the golf course. Yes. And then she turns around and slaps us in the face.
SPEAKER_01Ah, that Mother Nature, she is a jerk. She's a jerk. That seems I don't think you could say that. I know? I don't think you can say that. Sometimes she just messes with my head and I don't care for it. Listen, buddy, you would be wise to maybe, I don't know, be show a little kindness to Mother Nature.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, because she could really make life difficult like that.
SPEAKER_01You could get struck by a lightning bolt when you leave here.
SPEAKER_00Well, geez.
SPEAKER_01You went right to that, huh? I went dark quickly. You really did. Dave, you tell me. Uh let's just jump. Oh, you know what we need to do. I'm sorry, I don't mean to jump right into the city. Exactly. Let's talk about our winners. Our giveaway. Our giveaway winners that we um we uh you've probably seen this if you're following us on on social media, but we gave a mug away through to our Instagram listeners as well as our Facebook. Yep. Stanley mug. I mean, it wasn't just like, you know, a little junky mug. No, it wasn't like something that I'd been using for the past three or four years down at Maverick. Yeah, that you just threw on the pottery wheel. No, this was Stanley, this was quality ticket. This is high quality. They they put these out for sale and they're gone in like, you know, minutes. Yeah. Kind of like a Garth Brooks concert ticket. I I would imagine. Although I'd love to go see a Garth Brooks ticket. I would too. In fact, I actually camped out for one when I was in high school. You did? I did with my brother Wade and my cousin. Did you get your tickets? No, I sure didn't, but they too those two did, and they just left me outside. Wait a minute. Yeah, jerks. This is a whole different podcast. I know, and I don't mean to just jump us down that rabbit hole, but yeah, I was in Pocatello at the mini dome. He was coming. I would have been maybe a freshman or a sophomore in high school. We went up there, camped out all night. They actually uh won like a lottery, like they bought, they were able to purchase our tickets because they drew their name, and the rest of us were camping out to see what we could get. Yeah, I didn't get it. Well, they got 'em. They got 'em, and they just took their maybe their significant others of the time. I don't know, but I for sure didn't get it. I feel like you earned it. I thank you. You were there all night long. This has been almost 30 years ago, and it's still kind of as a burr under my salad. It kind of haunts you a little bit, doesn't it? Sorry, we're talking about winners. Yeah. And this I wasn't being a winner there. Um Instagram. Instagram. Uh Allie Williams. Allie Williams.
SPEAKER_00Congratulations to Allie Williams.
SPEAKER_01So fantastic. We can hand deliver that one. Yeah, we sure can. I mean, she's just right down the street. Yep. And I actually hope to be able to hand deliver the other one as well to my good friend. This was from Facebook, Sherry Malan. Oh. Yeah, so fantastic. She, fun fact, and and not to I realize that we can't just throw people under the bus and tell all sorts of personal information, because maybe maybe she's a private individual. I don't know. Yeah. But she definitely has ties to Grouse Creek. Really? Yeah, she does. She does. And so when I I will see her out there on occasion, so uh maybe we'll do a uh hand deliver there as well.
SPEAKER_00Cool, that'd be great. Congratulations to those two, and thanks to everyone who took part in that. Hopefully it was fun, and uh we got a couple good winners out of it.
SPEAKER_01We got some great winners, and we we saw our subscription numbers rise a little bit and our likes and follows. And again, we're gonna always push for that. So if you're listening to it, whether it be on you know iTunes, Apple Music, Google Play, Stitcher, Spotify, just subscribe. Just subscribe. That'd be nice, yeah. Just you know, maybe give us a thumbs up, you know, a like somewhere. Something. Yeah. Um, but enough of that, buddy.
SPEAKER_00You tell me you've got an idea. I do have an idea, and I you know we both have ideas as we come to these things, and we don't want the other to know what we want to what we want to talk about, because I want your genuine, your genuine feedback on this thing. But this particular one took me a little time to prepare for. Okay, so you you are coming at this fully prepared.
SPEAKER_01I have got zero. You have no idea. I have never been so unvarnished in my entire life.
SPEAKER_00You have no idea what's gonna happen. Okay, I'm ready. I'm gonna start this out tonight, today, however, whoever's listening, yeah. Exactly. Um tell me about your TV situation growing up in Grouse Creek. I what I envisioned growing up in the in the double white is you might have had a satellite dish out back of the of the house that's about the size of the house, or at least half the size of the house. How were you, rabbit ears? How were you getting your how were you getting your programs?
SPEAKER_01First thank you for calling them programs, and you know that my programs are very important to me. Now, the effect that you would assume that we'd have a satellite dish, and I know the kind that you're talking about. Huge huge like you're landing the shuttle with and do you remember like we first of all we didn't have one because that was for the affluent, and we were not quite there yet. Okay, but my grandmother had one, my granny, and I and I can still remember going to her home, and I want to say that Disney was like channel G124. Wow. Yeah, I remember that still to this day, and I remember typing that in, and then if you listened, because hers was just outside, you know, kind of in the backyard, you heard this because the satellite was moving? It was turned, yeah, it would turn. The whole satellite would just turn. It was absolutely amazing. There were two satellite dishes that I know of. No, three. Three satellite dishes in the town of Grousek, which maybe per capita that's pretty high, you know.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I would imagine. Those are the big ones you're talking about.
SPEAKER_01The big ones. I'm talking about the big ones that, yeah, they were set in cement out in the backyard or somewhere, and they would turn. So um our TV, we had a 19-inch. It was a Magnavox, but it had the first TV I remember that I remember, it had like the knobs on the front of it. You gotta get up to go turn it to turn it. And we only got uh channels four, five, which is AB at that time it was ABC and C BS. Now I think uh channel five is a lot of. Listen, I got a mind like a steel track. Well, you liked your program. Rusty still track. Channel seven, which was the PBS, channel eleven, and then channel two at the time was NBC, we couldn't get that, and we couldn't get channel thirteen, which was Fox. But my dad also, I come by my love of programs very naturally. He also loved TV, and so I do remember um we made our own antenna wire, and then we drove with uh my cousin had a little TV that a little black and white that you plug into a cigarette lighter. Oh, yeah, and so we drove across all of our property to look for the most optimal spot for an antenna. Okay, and by golly, it was up behind our house, oh maybe 200 yards up on a little hill, and that's where we put it, and then I remember making the antenna wire with some plastic blocks and hot glue guns and wire. Yeah, anyways, TV was a big deal, and we had one TV in the house, that was it. My dad had a water meeting one time that was gonna be held at our home, but I maybe I've talked about this before, but that was the night that the classic TV or the movie with Clint Eastwood, every which way but loose, left turn Clyde, right turn Clyde. Do you remember that big ape riding in the passenger seat of his old truck? I must have had more things to do. Yeah, you I lived a very um You're simple, man. You were a shepherd. What's the word when I lived a very like a choice blessed life? Yeah. Because I had this lavish, lavish life. My dad picked the TV up, put it back in his and my mom's bedroom, just so that we could watch that. Because again, there's no there's no VCRs, there's no DVD D VRs. I mean you're watching it now or not at all. And so, yeah, I love TV. One 19-inch, it eventually lost its color, still stuck with Magnavox, and I think we upgraded to like a 21-inch or something like that. Yeah, kind of that's a good day.
SPEAKER_00High end. That's a good day. Well, there's a lot of programs from back in our youth. For sure. That I think we need to play a game today. Okay. And the game today is name that tune from your childhood programs.
SPEAKER_01Oh, it's there's like a a game show about that. Do I have to tell you how many notes? Nope. Okay, good.
SPEAKER_00I'm gonna play, I'm gonna play for the most part, I'll play just a few seconds. Maybe even I don't even think I'll get further than 10 seconds on these.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00But what I'd like is you I don't really necessarily want you to just blurt it out because I feel like our listeners might want to be in in the car. They can play along.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00They might have their kids in the car and they'll be yelling out the names of these of these songs. Okay. And then their kids would be like, what in the world is that? Okay, so I can't wait. I'm excited. And you know what got me into this is the other night I was I was uh surfing the Netflix. Okay, looking just looking for a new program. Sure. And it took me to a place that was definitely not a new program. And I'm starting out with that one tonight.
SPEAKER_01Okay, and I won't blurt it out, but I'm you're going to know, I'll say I know it if I know it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and you we'll be able to hear Jason through the music here.
SPEAKER_01There is going to be some toe tapping and possibly some bursting into song.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I in fact I thought about that tonight too as I was coming up here. I'm like, uh, our listeners might want to know that we might burst into song. Yeah, for sure we will.
SPEAKER_01Now, I don't no spoiler alert or no uh put the car before the horse, but buddy, this may be the best idea you've ever had.
SPEAKER_00Well, I don't have many of them, so let's well, I don't know, we'll have to see how this thing works. But this first one, I giggled. Uh grown man giggled the other day when I came across this and I heard the the the theme music, and here we go.
SPEAKER_01Oh shoot. We're having a little bit of technical difficulties. Technical difficulties. Did the speaker turn off? It must have turned off. Well, let's just do it again. You guys, you're seeing how the sausage was made, you know? We'll just peel the curtain back a little bit and let's give that a test. Um, we have got to. I'm a little nervous though, because I obviously heard what you played and it didn't come right to me.
SPEAKER_00It didn't? Yeah, turn that on. You know what I did? I turned my phone on airplane mode so that we didn't get like random text. All I did is I had to turn this on.
SPEAKER_01Let me try that again. Oh, I think I turned it on.
SPEAKER_00I had a feeling this was gonna happen. Hold on, I gotta hit this button. Oh, that feels good. It's like it's like uh in the penguins of Madagascar when the bad guy calls in and he's they're like, Well, we now we can't hear you, but we can see you. You know, all those all those fun things. Um okay, we're connected. Okay, you ready for this? I'm ready, let's go. Here we go.
SPEAKER_01First of all, this is awesome. I love the sound of this.
SPEAKER_00Oh, it's I mean it's it's kind of back, it's back of mind. What if I was to say, Michael? The bad guys are coming right behind it. You zip it, kid. Um Night Rider. Night Rider.
SPEAKER_01How cool is this? It's awesome. We are missing real skills, and and this is a fantastic piece of art.
SPEAKER_00If I may be so bold. Absolutely. I don't know how long we can play these without having copyrighted copyright issues. I'm thinking with 10 seconds or something. Yeah, well, you'll cross that. What are they gonna do? Come and say, hey, what are those two guys doing in the basement? Listening to Send us a cease and desist.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, send it, send it, we'll be fine. Okay, I like that. Knight Rider. Now, I I'm gonna tell you, I had to kind of that was a stretch. I probably wouldn't have been able to get it without your hint because, as I mentioned earlier, I believe Night Rider was an NBC show, weeding King Channel 2. Well, see, now this is gonna get interesting.
SPEAKER_00Yes, it is. There are first of all, Knight Rider is kind of awesome. I I watched the number the the first episode ever of Knight Rider the other day. Really? The first did you know that the the initial guy that's not it's not David Hasselhoff. There's somebody else that is the is Michael at the beginning and he gets three? He gets shot in the face. What? The part of the story is he gets shot in the face and he has to have this plastic surgery, and now he looks completely different and he is looks like David Hasselhoff. Hasselhoff. The Hoff.
SPEAKER_01Um that's interesting. I obviously did not know that. When I was in ninth grade, I went to Universal Studios with my granny and my two aunts and my cousin. Actually, different trips, sorry, but still, it was with most of those people. We went to Universal Studios and I saw the the car. Oh well, yeah, I've seen it. The car was there.
SPEAKER_00I mean, the DeLorean is there too from Back City. Big fan of that. Me too. We gotta move through these. Yeah, okay, go ahead. Because I have I have some stuff here. Okay. And I'm curious to know how you do. Here we go.
unknownNow the world moves.
SPEAKER_01Oh Different Strokes. I mean, now I know that. Oh, sorry. I believe that you asked me not to. That's okay. I'm hoping some other people are like loving it.
SPEAKER_00Nothing but the jeans.
SPEAKER_01Oh, that's good stuff. I is that Different Strokes is one of my favorite shows of all time.
SPEAKER_00Oh, yeah, it was great. So if you remember, if you think you're a Different Strokes guy, here's your trivia question for the night. Okay. Uh Arnold had a bully. There was a bully. Can you remember his name? Because I'm gonna start calling you this when you're when you bully me.
SPEAKER_01Would I bully would you want to file a boy bully report? Yeah. I remember an episode when he was bullied, but I don't even have it. I mean He was bullied in multiple episodes. Really? Yeah.
SPEAKER_00You're gonna love it by the way.
SPEAKER_01Give me the first letter, and I'll guess.
SPEAKER_00Well, he I'm gonna say it it starts with the. He calls him the kid. No. The and then it starts with a G. The gooch. Yes, the gooch! Since you said that. The gooch. I shouldn't hear him say it now.
SPEAKER_01Leave me alone, you go. Who doesn't want to be the gooch? I loved that show. First of all, okay, how about this? What spin-off? Sorry, I know we gotta go through these things, but what spin-off, there was a spin-off of that show from The Maid, the original maid on Different Strokes, did a spin-off to another show that I know you and I love.
SPEAKER_02Take the good, you take the best, take them both. That's what's that's what's gonna be. Yeah, I know.
SPEAKER_00I was gonna ask you that single tricky question. You were? Yeah. Yeah, I knew that one. Yeah, that's that's Mr. was the word never seen a chance. I need like a karaoke machine. I get to see the words about some of the some of the um It's a little bit high, a little bit low. Yeah, we gotta find the find it.
SPEAKER_01Um a real tragedy in TV shows today, like these, if you watch these old shows, these theme songs would go on for like what, 30 seconds at least? A long time. A long time. And now they just shorten them up so much, and they're I think it's just because they need more playing time, still a 30-minute time slot, but you get more content, I guess. I don't know, but I miss the theme songs. Great one.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I'm gonna take you to one now. This is a this is one that people listened or watched like religiously. Okay. And I never did.
SPEAKER_02Oh.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, well, I'm gonna see if you did. Here we go. Oh, cheers. Yeah, sorry, I'm gonna go. It's okay. I'm not sure. It's okay. Taking your way in the world. I think today. But did you watch it? Yes. But it was definitely a little scandalous for a kid to watch. Yeah. That maybe that's why my I don't know, we just didn't watch it. Maybe my parents thought, well, we can't have the kids watching.
SPEAKER_01There was a use a to do a little bit of cultural uh trivia here, when Sam, who was Ted Dancing, uh remember, I don't know, you wouldn't know, but he sold the bar to a character, I can't remember her name, but her the actress was Kirsty Alley. Yes. And I can't remember her name, Sam and Sam and Diane, and then Sam I can't remember, but uh she gets flowers one time. And uh she's like, Oh, why can't Mormon or Mormon fl uh send flowers? And Sam's like, I think Mormons can send flowers. She's like, not Mormons, more men. He's like, I know they can't dance. Obviously he's never seen us. Exactly. Goodwood, goodwood. That's our that's a um what's the word I'm looking for?
SPEAKER_00That's just timeless. Yeah, that's a classic. Let me uh let me see if you know this one. Yeah, I I mean I I blurted it out. Yeah, do you did you grow did you watch this one?
SPEAKER_01Yes, I did.
SPEAKER_00This is another one I could never get into. Um my buddy Jason watched MASH Religiously. Really?
SPEAKER_01We watched it because my dad would watch it, and so I mean, it's not like you could go to the TV in the basement.
SPEAKER_00You know, I think it was the song bugged me.
unknownReally?
SPEAKER_00Is that weird this song? Well, now I feel like it's nice, but when it came on, I'm like, well, that seems like a boring show. No, they're running underneath a live helicopter while this song is playing. Well, that's nothing. Look, I don't know what to tell you. I it I uh the it would come on and I was like, I had a little crush on Hallip Zulan. I mean, I don't know. Okay, wait, hope stop. Okay. Um, I don't know if you know this, but in fact, you we were together with our wives the other night, and you had said something about a crush. Yes. And then you walked away, and I said to everybody else at the table, is it me or has Jason had a lot of crushes in his life? So I've started a list. You started a list, okay. So who is it? Hot Lips Who? Hot Lips Hulahan.
SPEAKER_01I don't know how to spell that. She was, I mean, she and Frank Burns, you know, were that is so funny. You know, they were the item, but I mean Hawkeye and um Pierce. I mean I'm losing the names, but they would always kind of harass Frank and you know, Hotlips Hulahan and all this stuff. I just stand up.
SPEAKER_00The name Hotlips Hoolahan is wonderful.
SPEAKER_01Put it to the list. I'm anxious to get this list one time. Yeah, well, I got three of them on their edge. There's more than three. I know there's more than three. Some of them are are like famous people, but some, and maybe we'll talk about this in the podcast one time. I mean, I've had so many crushes from uh first one being Amy that gave me uh Starburst in Church. Well, wait a minute, let me make sure I have her on here.
SPEAKER_00Just double check. Yes, I do. Yes, I got her. Okay, good, good, good. She needs to be on that list for sure. Okay, here we go. We gotta keep this moving along. Yep. Now this one was difficult, even though I know you watched it. Not quite. No. Oh. That's what Susie thought. They must have no Cosby? Yes. That is Cosby show. Didn't they change the theme song? I don't know, maybe they did. But we all watched it.
SPEAKER_01We all watched it. It was a great show. It was a great show. It was a little bit of a challenging though. That was another NBC, so I watched it more almost.
SPEAKER_00I think it was NBC, but had to go to your friend's house. Yeah, exactly. Okay. I don't think I would have come up with this one either. Okay, let's hear it. Oh, I know this one. Oh, I know this one. I know we have some listeners in their cars right now yelling at. Is it is it like um wing? No. I think that there's actually there were words to this.
SPEAKER_01I know this song, but I'm first letter. F. As in family. This is family ties? Yeah. Really, that would have been a tough one, but I love the Alex P. Keaton, one of the things. He was great.
SPEAKER_00He was great. Moving on.
SPEAKER_01Please. Oh. This is Nightcore. Yes. Yeah, and I that was another show that I probably shouldn't have been watching, but I'd watch this every night after the news at 10:30. What? Go to bed! I listen, I had to get my nightcore fixed. I love this is without a doubt. Do I can I I'm gonna say top 10 because I don't want to be ridiculous, but for sure top ten.
SPEAKER_00Okay, so we played here's a fun fact. In seventh grade band, maybe eighth grade band, like we played this. And this was my part. That one. Again. What did you do? That was me. I had the claves. Oh I was in percussion. I thought maybe you did like No, I had the claves. It was a little. That was my part. I sat around, I waited for that. Yeah, well, that the song would not be the same without us. No. So I had basically the I was the star of the star of the film.
SPEAKER_01You gotta watch these shows, Dave. I love these shows.
SPEAKER_00Okay, let me take you back. Let me take you back to the mid-80s. Okay. Now I'm sure the show, these shows I'm gonna share with you next were probably even before that. But when I was a youngster, for I might have been for Christmas, we got a synthesizer. Oh yeah. A keyboard, you know.
SPEAKER_01My brother got one for Christmas.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, well, those were awesome because you could you could do certain things in that base in that uh in that base cleft that if you just touch a note, it's gonna play something in that key.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and then you change it.
SPEAKER_00I know. Well, we went and my dad got us lessons, and we went down to uh what was that place in the mall that used to sell all those things?
unknownI don't know.
SPEAKER_00I I should know that. Keith Watkins was Radio Shack. No, it was Keith Watkins, and but we had lessons, and I learned this song. I learned the next two songs on the synthesizer, and I could crush it. You ready? Yeah, let's go.
unknownOh.
SPEAKER_00I just feel like I'm playing it right now. I know I I know this. Oh, this Dallas. Yes. I would pick it up right about here.
SPEAKER_01Just picture me on the synthesizer right now. I mean that is it a synthesizer? Is it a horn? I don't even know. I know. It was something else. See, it's so funny. These shows, a lot of them I probably had no business watching. But I remember watching Dallas with my grandpa with my granny. Oh my goodness, I love that show. I mean, who shot JR?
SPEAKER_00I well, I didn't ever watch it. Oh, it's too bad. I mean, but you've always been a uh a soap opera kind of guy. Play Days of Our Lives. Yeah, I don't have that one on here. Okay, here's the other one I learned on the synthesizer. Okay.
SPEAKER_01This has gotta be like a Western.
SPEAKER_00Okay, you're you're on the track.
SPEAKER_01I I mean it's not it's not like Bonanza or something. No. No. Come on, Paul! Oh, Little House of the Prairie. You got it. I don't listen, I don't think NBC can ever sponsor us because I obviously am not as well versed with NBC. Back in the day, Channel 2 was NBC, we just didn't get it. I'm sorry, those were good programs. Did you watch a lot on Little House?
SPEAKER_00I feel like I watched enough to know who people are. I don't even know if I've seen one episode. Well, I'm sorry, you've lost you lost out on something. I got a Friday night coming up, so we'll see what we can do. Here's one. Me and David Webb on our big wheels. I got socks pulled up to my elbows for my gloves. But chips, chips patrol.
SPEAKER_01Where where did you get all this music?
SPEAKER_00Like is did you create a playlist? Yeah, I've created a playlist. Good stuff, right? Speaking of shows you probably shouldn't watch as a youngster. Please, I've watched most of them. I know you have. Here we go. Love bump.
SPEAKER_01You love. It's exciting and new. Come aboard. We're expecting you. Yeah. Get the hideous. Belt it out, my friend. I'm probably too close to the bike to be belted it out. Do you do you sing in the car, top of your lungs? Oh, without without question. Me too. In fact, I had just a great father-daughter experience like about three days ago. It was my youngest Kate. We went and grabbed a drink, and then she was introducing me to some of some a little bit more modern music. And she's like, Can we keep driving? And it was cold outside. Rolled the windows down. We just had a dance party. She introduced me to this. I'd heard it before, but it's like King Queens, Queen of King King. It's a great song. I feel like I've heard it. You've heard it, yeah, for sure you have. But it's uh we were just sing it loud as we could. That's fun.
SPEAKER_00My uh my oldest and I, we we go on drives and we just sing. Yeah. But my wife, she's a dud when it comes to singing. No, just tonight we were driving home from a soccer game and I'm like, take it, Seuss! And she's just nah. I'm like, what's going on here?
SPEAKER_01Listen, I I guess you gotta work with her. I I remember when Heather and I first got married, right in the middle of the kitchen, and it maybe it was December, maybe it wasn't. But all of a sudden, out of the blue eyes, like, who's got a beard that's long-handed white? Will Heather sing with you? Yeah, for sure. Oh, well, I don't think I've ever heard her sing. No, she got a beautiful voice.
SPEAKER_00Well it doesn't really matter. No, it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. Look at us. We're singing right now. You do have a golden throat. Well, that's kind of you, but I like to sing in the car.
SPEAKER_01I would prefer people to sing with me. In fact, I remember sometimes people say, Could we just listen to the song? I'm like, well, if you're in my truck, then I'm gonna sing. Yeah, we're gonna sing it. We're gonna sing it.
SPEAKER_00That's how we do it. Here we go. The sound of these are so 70s. Yeah, speaking of other shows, the Common Knock on our door. Streets Company. Yeah. Did you watch this one?
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah, I did. But that was scandalous. I don't think we should be watching that either. Because I was pretty young when that one came up. Yeah, I think. I mean Mr. Furley, I mean Jack. You were the youngest child, right? For sure. I think David and they give up. They said, you know what? Maybe they had a good feel about me. They're like, you know, he'll still turn out. He'll be alright. Yeah. He'll be alright. We all watched this one.
SPEAKER_00Here's the story. Yeah, Mitsubishi. Yeah. I love that show. And who doesn't, from our era, who doesn't know every word of this song? Every single word.
SPEAKER_02All of them had hair on gold.
SPEAKER_00Like their mother. The youngest one in curls. Okay, so. That's great. I love that one. This one is might is even older than us. I'm gonna throw some out there to our uh our parents' generation. Okay.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I gave it away, right? I gave it away, but I I love this show. The Fonz was actually my hero. Oh yeah. Your hero? I I mean maybe he's not a good hero. I I I actually asked my mom, I remember as a kid, to buy me a black jacket. He wanted that leather jacket. Yeah, he wanted to look in the mirror and say, hey. Um, trivia for question for you. Do you know what spinoff came from the happy days? That was another great show. Joni loves Chachi. Well, I know what I think that's wait.
SPEAKER_00It is one. Joni Loves Chachi is they were characters from Happy Days.
SPEAKER_01Oh, for sure they were, but what what TV show? Isn't that what it was called? Well, the the show that maybe was, because I know Joni Loves Chachi, but I didn't know it was a show, but Laverne and Shirley.
SPEAKER_02What?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, Laverne and Shirley were characters on Happy Days. This next? You had that next?
SPEAKER_00I'm ready. I planned for this. This is what it was. I didn't know this was a spin-off of a Happy Day. Yeah, sure was.
SPEAKER_01It's come true. Okay, okay. And yeah, that was, they were uh Squiggy and Lenny were on. I would like somebody to fact check me on this, but I'm pretty sure I'm right. Oh yes, they were. Squiggy and Lenny were were friends of the phones. Yes. Yep. And uh but I think they're I actually think that they changed a little bit of their characters in the show. But still.
SPEAKER_00Okay. Here's another one for this is this one's for our uh parents' generation. It's familiar. All I know is I think my parents lay in their bed and watch this pretty much all night. Oh, I I you won't know. No. It's Matt Lock.
SPEAKER_01Oh, Matt Lock. No, I don't know that, but that's fantastic.
SPEAKER_00Because if they're not watching that, uh it's actually probably coming on right after this. Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Uh uh it's it's Happy Days Guy.
SPEAKER_00It's uh Andy Griffith's show. Yep, Andy. My dad and his brothers and my grandpa, they could quote Andy Griffith, like I can quote Seinfeld. I love that. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, this is Opie. I mean Opie who then Ron Howard. I mean, he's what a champion of. Can you whistle it? I can't whistle. I can do it this way. It's a good whistle. Such an iconic opening scene though. You know, walking down a dirt road. Feels very grouse creeky and.
SPEAKER_00Okay, let's get let's get hold on, let me see if I need. I think I already did that one. Did I do love boat? You did. Okay, let's play it again. Might have it on here twice. Okay, let's get younger now. Okay. Okay, these are these are we are under 10 years old at this point. Okay. Here we go. Yeah, for sure. Noah, Flintstones. Yeah, Flintstones. Here's one that I wouldn't have come up with. I I couldn't wake up early enough for this. Smurfs. Yeah, the smirch. Yeah. I can see you as a guy that would wake up at six and you're looking at the little red and the bars. The bars on the TV. The programs hadn't even started yet. 100% correct.
SPEAKER_01You're waiting for that too. 100% correct. Had a bowl of like some sort of sugar-coated cereal. Not to put this in our listeners' eyes, but for sure, am I Taddy Whitey's under a blanket? That's it. You're under ruse. Amunder ruse, under a blanket, watching Saturday. I mean, Saturday mornings were sacred to me. Yeah. The Smurfs. What else do you like? The Richie Rich? Uh Richie Rich. I was a definitely a classic Looney Tunes. Loved them. Okay. Loved Looney Tunes. Um, I don't know. Heather and I were talking about something the other day, and she just popped out Gargamel. I'm like, Oh, he's the bad guy in the Smurfs. He's very scary. Yeah. I actually have a Smurfs record. I have to play it for it sometime. I'm a blue toothbrush, you're a pink toothbrush, and we met by the bathroom door.
SPEAKER_00I got the record. You know what? Don't play it for me. It'll be fine. This is uh this is a classic for everybody. Oh yeah. I loved this. I mean this is this is the all the parents can sing this.
SPEAKER_02Some meetings! Love.
SPEAKER_00And right after that would come on Fred Mr. Rogers.
SPEAKER_01I didn't watch that as much as I did Sesame Street. In fact, I would fight with my brother and sister because they wanted to watch something else, and I wanted to watch Sesame Street, and I usually always won.
SPEAKER_00Okay, here's this one. I didn't watch this either, but I know a lot of kids did. This is familiar.
unknownMr.
SPEAKER_01Gadget. Inspector Gadget. Inspector Gadget. Mr. Gadget. I love that's one that I watched on the satellite dish at my granny's house. Really? Oh yeah. I never did.
SPEAKER_00Oh, I mean Mr. Claw and the Cat. No, I didn't watch it. I heard I just knew that Go-Go Gadget Arms and stuff. Go-go Gadget Arms. Isn't it funny that I'm other people?
SPEAKER_01I'll still say that phrase.
SPEAKER_00I bet a lot of people do. Yeah. You know, there's other there's other things that. Well, let me finish this. We'll talk about phrases in just a minute. But now we get into our teenage years. And you know the stuff like our kids will watch, like on Nickelodeon and stuff like that, that are just stupid. For sure. Terrible question, horrible. Our parents had to have felt the same way about this next program. I don't like where you're going. Say Bad Bell? Yes. All you needed to do is hear the I love that show.
SPEAKER_01I did too. Trivia for you. Do you know what that song, what I believe the show was originally started as?
SPEAKER_00Yes, it was Miss Bliss. Good morning, Miss Bliss. Good morning, Miss Bliss. And and what's the principal's name? Uh Belding. Mr. Belding. Mr. Belding. You know, it's a shame about Screech. It really is. Rest in peace. Rest in peace. RIP Screech. Um there were there were sayings from commercials when we were kids that I think still stick. Yes. Like, if you wanted to learn how to read, what would work for you? Hooked on photos. Hooked on phone that's working for you. Hooked on or PSA. You, alright?
SPEAKER_01I love you.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that one and um if you had to explain to somebody what your brain would look like on drugs, what would it look like? Like a fried egg. Yeah, a fried egg. This is your brain. This is your brain. This is your brain on drugs. Any questions? How did I mean that is perfect advertising?
SPEAKER_01Fantastic marketing, and talking about getting to the heart of the issue because, I mean, 100% correct. Absolutely correct. It seems like there was something else I thought about. Do you remember like uh Wendy's had a pretty big promotion, a campaign? I'm sure probably trying to keep up with the golden arches, and it was this old lady, she had a phrase. Where's the beef? Where's the beef? And then all of a sudden Wendy's starts inventing these square hamburgers, you know, that basically covers the entire, you know, the whole bun. Overlaps the bun.
SPEAKER_00Um, we're gonna bring this home now. Okay. On these are not oh wait. We didn't do this one. I feel like we need a Muppets show! Oh, I love it.
SPEAKER_01I can see you watching the Muppets. Love the Muppets. However, there were a few Muppet characters that scared the living daylight. Which one? Animal? Animal not so much, but the big tall guy. Um, just big, shaggy, big old nose, eyes, um almost like a Yeti type of a guy. Yes, and it was I know what you're talking about. A big bird followed that bird or something. He just he was too much for me.
SPEAKER_00It's just too scary.
SPEAKER_01What's your favorite? Super Grover? No, I do like Super Grover, but I I mean I got a soft spot in my heart for Fozzie Bear. Oh, Fozzie Bear. And the great gonzo.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Um, remember Beaker?
SPEAKER_02Me, me, me, me, me.
SPEAKER_00Or was it the chef? I don't remember his name.
SPEAKER_01Um, I don't either. I should know that because I love I love everything Muppet.
SPEAKER_00Well, I love everything this next one. Okay. This one is a movie that we've talked about before. I can't wait. This is good stuff. My friends is for sure. I know actually. Yeah, my friends are listening to this right now, going, yes. It's Chevy. It is. Listen to how great this is.
SPEAKER_01I don't know how long we can do it. It's so good though.
SPEAKER_00Listen to the coming up.
SPEAKER_01So good. That's for sure a synthesizer. Oh yeah. They're working the synthesizer on that thing. That those are two of the Fletch and Fletch Lives. I know we talked about that on our movie pod, but can you rank one over the other?
SPEAKER_00No. They're just both. You know, when you first watch Fletch Lives, you're like, ah, and but then you watch it again and again, you're like, oh, they are so good. They're both fantastic. I had I we we should just we should probably call it it that, but I had Back to the Future on here, which I know you would have gotten. Yeah, I love that. Um remember Axel F from Um What's the show? Beverly Hills Cop. I never saw Beverly Hills Cop, but the song was great. Let's hear a little if you've got it, let's hear a little taste. Let's see. It's classic, right? It's classic. And you know exactly. Now listen to this still sounds full to me. Like when I say full, it's not like it's just a mono. Just listen to how this comes out. Yeah. Feels rich. Yeah. I think we're advertising for these people. Like, a lot of our listeners are gonna go find this. Yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_01They're gonna either well, they're either gonna buy it on Amazon or something, but it's fantastic. Um all those songs, even some of the classic 80s movies, I loved the soundtracks to them. Um I'm trying to think of, you know, Secret of My Success. Um that just had great would I be incorrect in saying like David Foster-esque type of piano solos and stuff that you'd hear in these shows.
SPEAKER_00I just do you think that there's as good of stuff now, but we're just not appreciating it because we're older. Well, that's gotta be part of it.
SPEAKER_01I mean, because for sure there's some nostalgia to it that I love as well. Um But even thinking about to our cartoon conversation, like, even to this day, I'll say, Oh, you know, you are such a gem. If you were a cartoon, you'd be gemming the holograms. And they're like, who?
SPEAKER_00Who there's some good stuff.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, the music is fantastic.
SPEAKER_00Here's another thing from our from uh advertising back in the day that I I'll be surprised if you don't know who you won't know who this is. It's it's the same song as from Titanic. Titanic, but it's not sung by the indomitable Celine Dion. This is a different version by somebody that was classic on the commercials back in the days. He was a master of the pan flute. Zomphir, master of the pan flute. Do you not remember that commercial? No. What was they what were they selling? I'm I maybe it was late-night stuff that you know you're sitting up and you should go to bed, and you're like, and the infomercial comes on for Zomphir, Master of the Pan Flute. You stumped me. I mean you stumped me.
SPEAKER_01It's beautiful.
SPEAKER_00It's gorgeous. It's gorgeous. Who doesn't want to listen to the pan flute? Oh, you need that in it in some sort of a meditation room doing yoga.
SPEAKER_01You know yoga. Yeah, you know I can stretch out. Yeah, you can, and I've done a few moves myself here. Um that that was listen, not knowing anything going into this, I don't know how I I think our fans are will like it as well. I hope it'll spark some memories, but I loved it.
SPEAKER_00Well, I appreciate that. Um I hope I hope that this has got some good conversations going on in some families and a lot of smiles. You know, you take the good, you take it bad. But when you take them both, you already have the facts of life. Thanks again, folks, for listening to another episode of the Small Towns Podcast. We're pretty sure we've changed your life for the better. If not, well, we'll try again next time.
