Dave and Jason are joined by their WAY better half’s…. or is it halves? IDK… for our anniversary episode! Suzie and Heather set the record straight! Kind of… Sort of…
Welcome millions upon millions, perhaps billions, of faithful podcast listeners. We are your hosts, Jason Kimber and Dave Simmons.
SPEAKER_01We'll bring you along with us as we share life stories from our experiences living in small towns. Or in Jason's case, an unincorporated community. That's true. Along with genius suggestions for solving world problems and a whole lot of laughs.
SPEAKER_03This is the Small Towns Podcast. Dave, good evening. I've only really got one thing to say to you, and that is happy anniversary. Oh, happy anniversary.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, can you believe we've been doing this for one year? In a way, yeah. Yeah, yeah. But sometimes I think what else do we have to say? It feels a whole lot longer, doesn't it? It really does.
SPEAKER_03But it's been a lot of fun this first year. It's been fantastic. We actually started just uh to get the facts out. We started on March 17th, 2021. Fun fact, March 17th, St. Patrick's Day. I don't care for St. Patrick's Day. I have some problems. So you hate Halloween. We're gonna talk a lot about that.
SPEAKER_01Don't change, don't put my eggs green. When I go to get a donut at Lee's, it shouldn't be green. It tastes better on St. Patrick's Day, and then you don't get pinched. Well, I don't mind the pinching.
SPEAKER_03You know what I also did in kind of preparation for this uh momentous occasion? My words fail me, but this is a big day. I also had a tax appointment on March 17th, 2021. So a little shout out to Shane Roberts. Thanks, buddy. Well, and how'd it go? Uh fantastic.
SPEAKER_01We just paid some taxes. Okay, well. It was good. Do you remember the days when you used to get a bunch of money back? Oh, buddy, I know. Those were so good. Those were good days. Those were good days. Now those seem to be long gone. Did you give me anything for our anniversary? Yeah, I did, actually. Oh good. It's an old-fashioned kick in the mouth. Well, let me tell you what I got you.
SPEAKER_03A handshake! Okay. Oh, well, that seems just gentlemanly and skeleton. Let me tell you what I got you. I got you the opportunity, and quite frankly, this was a gift that I thought we would give to the world. Okay.
SPEAKER_01I'm a little nervous about this, by the way. No, because you and I both. Hey, I'm not taking my shirt off. You told we decided that it's a New Year's resolution. I am three months in here. I've not taken well, two and a half. I've never even taken my shirt off once. The gift was. Even the shower.
SPEAKER_03Never nude. Um the gift that I give is that we have special guests today. I know we do. Special, special. I'm a little worried about this.
SPEAKER_01As you should be.
SPEAKER_03As am I.
SPEAKER_01As you should be. Yes, please. Maybe even more than me. Introduce them, why don't you? Do you want me to introduce mine or yours? Yeah. That'd be fun. You introduce mine. I'd like to uh welcome special guests. No, I'm gonna I'm gonna introduce mine. Please, that'd be better. This is my she's not yours. Well, yeah, I get you. But this is my better half, and this is the beautiful Susie. Um Susie, say hello.
SPEAKER_04Hi.
SPEAKER_01She's she's more than my better half, she's like my better three-quarters. I would probably say like better. Seven eighths. Like, or I'm not vulnerable with with fractions, but like, yeah, just better everything. Better everything. Yeah, I I definitely married up with this one. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04And can I just throw in, speaking of anniversaries, this month, March 22nd, we're married 25 years. 25? Is that a metal?
SPEAKER_03Is that a metal? Is that like placard?
SPEAKER_04It's silver, is it? Whoops. Pretty exciting. It's not paper.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I haven't taken care of that one. Well, you you've heard uh Angelic laugh uh on the uh on the on the mic here as well. Because my lovely wife, Heather. Hi, Heather. Say hello. Say hello to the world to our billions of listeners.
SPEAKER_05Hi.
SPEAKER_03Uh we are coming up on 18 years. 18. 18 in May.
SPEAKER_04In May.
SPEAKER_03In May. Is that anything? Is that like maybe aluminum?
SPEAKER_04I mean, it's gotta be something. I think so.
SPEAKER_03Bubblegum. You don't get much more. Yeah. Okay, wait, but I I both Dave and I thought that it would be fun to have 100% our better halves with us today because I they've got a lot to offer. Um there are a few times that you and I have been questioned. As fact as we should have.
SPEAKER_00Well, I know.
SPEAKER_03Usually my side's the correct side.
SPEAKER_00Well, I don't know, not that.
SPEAKER_03But we've had a couple of episodes where we've is the correct terminology, we maybe have thrown our better halves under the bus. Oh yeah. And so they need to kind of come and set the record straight. Yeah. And yeah, poor Suzy.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_04It's alright.
SPEAKER_01I and usually I say, Suze, this is good stuff. And I need to tell her. And usually she's like, I don't know, but she's been a really good sport about this.
SPEAKER_04I tried.
SPEAKER_01Can we hold hands? Yeah. Oh my goodness. Jeez, keep your shirt on, man.
SPEAKER_03I mean, I feel like if she's gonna correct some of my stories, I should at least be holding her hand. Oh, I think one thing that we should start, um, and and our our listeners know that I'm all over the board with this, but we should let's talk a little bit about how we started this podcast, because you and I had talked about it for a long time, but I think you had talked about it with another buddy. Uh I mean I don't think so. No, well, and I thought it was the vet in Canada.
SPEAKER_01I can't remember. It was from your old one. None of it. Basically, uh it was Susie, I think, that said, uh, you guys really should start a podcast. And I'm like, nah, and she's like, yeah, and I'm like, nah, and she's like, do it, do it.
SPEAKER_03Okay. So again, these women are so smart because Heather actually bought me this microphone for Christmas, like well, a few years ago. I have a bad habit of Heather buying me gifts and then I don't open them up. I mean, I open them, but I didn't use them right away. But so I think our better halves encourage us to do this.
SPEAKER_04Well, and I feel like you guys had talked about it a lot and just kept talking about talking about it, and finally, I think it was last year, I was like, let's do it. Just do it. You gotta do it. You can't talk about it anymore.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yep.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, because I would have just kept talking about it. Yeah, me too. This is Suze would. It takes her to help me get things going.
SPEAKER_03A lot of people uh say about me that Jason Kimberly is all talk and no action. I don't believe him. No, they neither. Um, but I think it was again giving credit where credit's due. Uh Susie, I think you had a genius idea being our anniversary show. Tell us what's tell us what we're doing.
SPEAKER_04Well, uh, I am on Instagram kind of a lot, and people on Instagram seem to give away Stanley mugs all the time because that's the thing to to give away. And it's exciting. People want them apparently because they're sold out after about 30 minutes. Oh, I know. Heather's is right here, mine's right here. Um What are you doing in that? Can I have some of that? Yeah, it's just water. Go ahead. So, anyway, so I purchased two Stanley mugs the last time that they were uh released, and we want to give them away to two of your listeners because that's fine.
SPEAKER_03That is perfect. And we haven't talked about a lot of the details. I thought we could just suss those out. Uh the word is not sus. No. Sus. Sus? It's neither. I don't think it's either. No, I kind of want to just suss it out. No. Work them out.
SPEAKER_01Work it out.
SPEAKER_03The details, we need to get it.
SPEAKER_01Okay, we can okay, but sus, are you going for the like the oh that's sus?
SPEAKER_03Like no, I'm going like we need to like. Yeah, I don't think sus is right. That's not it. But there's a word, like, there's a word along those lines.
SPEAKER_01I know, and I know. I'm gonna try to think about it. Yeah. And when we get to it, it's fine. But I think that you're not gonna be. No, he wants to. No, there's a word. And everybody driving in their car right now, yelling at you.
SPEAKER_00Screaming at it.
SPEAKER_03I'm like, I'm gonna think really hard. Send it right now. Oh, wait, that this has not even been published. Um we've got to work out the deeds, like Susie said. And um, I think Heather will also help us like I don't really know how a giveaway will flesh.
SPEAKER_02Flesh it out! Flesh it out, flesh it out. We're gonna suspect. That's ridiculous.
SPEAKER_03Potato Patato Yeah, how are we gonna do it? Well, we need to have like a hashtag. So do we just do like hashtag small towns podcast?
SPEAKER_05Small towns.
SPEAKER_03Small towns. Yeah, forget the podcast, that's redundant. Okay. Hashtag small towns. Okay. And how would you Susie, you I think have you ever won anything off the contest? No, but I sure try. I sure try.
SPEAKER_04And I know people that have, so maybe we need to ask them what they did.
SPEAKER_03But like you, do you I mean, we need some things from you, fellow listener. We need you to subscribe at whatever platform you're listening to. We need you to like our Instagram page and subscribe to that too. Follow it.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, follow it, yeah.
SPEAKER_03And also Facebook. Yeah, we haven't done a lot of Facebook, but get ready. Like it is get it is like it is in the wings and it's ready to go. So before we we publish this one, before we drop this pod, we'll have that already. So you gotta Okay, are you doing that? I'm doing that. Okay, good, because I didn't want to do that.
SPEAKER_04I think you've gotta have some, I think people have to tag somebody too, because you gotta get this to multiply and they gotta put the hashtag small towns. Yes.
SPEAKER_03That's T-O-W-N-S, because there's two towns that have this whole thing started. So hashtag small towns, and you gotta share it. Right?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and I think we can put all the details on Instagram so nobody has to write anything down while they're driving.
SPEAKER_01So when this pod drops, we're gonna have it on those platforms that day. That day.
SPEAKER_04On Instagram and Facebook.
SPEAKER_01Yes. Okay. And then we're gonna give away two.
SPEAKER_04Yes, so we'll so we'll have a couple days to give time for them to enter. Okay, good. And then we're did you guys talk about picking maybe an Instagram winner and a Facebook winner?
SPEAKER_03Let's do it. Let's do it. And then I guess once we um release this, do we just sit back and just wait for the hordes of listeners to join? Probably.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I think that's how it happens.
SPEAKER_03We got like thousands upon thousands of downloads.
SPEAKER_05Well, that's good.
SPEAKER_04You're above 10,000, actually.
SPEAKER_03Probably me and you have downloaded them half the time. Most of them, you know. So, I mean, it's it's been it's been a fantastic year.
SPEAKER_01Yes, it is. Do we have any more content for another year? Oh, buddy.
SPEAKER_03You've got more things in your life. Listen, this has been my civic, this has been my week of civic responsibility. I've been to a local caucus meeting, I've been to a city meeting just tonight. Yeah. Um, I went to a school district meeting last night. I mean, you go to any of those meetings, you're gonna get some content.
SPEAKER_01You're probably right. Not everybody sees Jason Kimber show up at a city meeting like, don't say anything. Listen, don't you put this in your podcast on me? And I'm sorry. Sorry? Yeah, you said it.
SPEAKER_03Make your own podcast. Um okay, let's let's get into this. I have a feeling that we're gonna go over on this pod as we should. But um, I just wrote a few notes down, and again, Dave and I mentioned this earlier. We don't typically write notes down, but I want to ask Susie some questions to just get a better feel, and I'd like her to tell her side of the story. And Dave, I I think you could do the same with Heather. Yeah, for sure. Okay.
SPEAKER_01Um why don't you give us a start? Okay, let's do this. Um and maybe reference the pod you're talking about. Because there were pods that we have done in the past, so that if Jason maybe says something about something I said that that brings Susie into the mix, we might have to say, okay, in episode two. Okay. That way people can go back and kind of get a refresher if they want to. Yeah, that's a good point.
SPEAKER_03And I actually think most of these comments are gonna come from episode 21. Because just to refresh our listeners, the title of that pod was Things We Learned the Hard Way.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah. Yeah, they're gonna go right to the good stuff, aren't you? So right to the part where people say that Dave's a really, really sure crappy guy. He is a worse husband, the worst husband. Well, how she lives with you, I'll never know. That's fair.
SPEAKER_03Um so I think uh particularly, Susie, since you mentioned you are coming up on your 25th, your silver wedding anniversary. Yes. So tell me this, Susie. Being married 25 years, do you have a little bit better of an idea of what Dave does on the weekends? It is really none of her business.
SPEAKER_05So so one of my favorite stories.
SPEAKER_03It is, it is, mine too. So, with that, uh, we talked about that in detail on episode 21, and I encourage you, it's worth a re-listen. But Susie, can you um I'm gonna put you on the spot. Okay. Re you know the story we're talking about, but I'd like to hear your version of it, and it might be fun to compare. She lived it.
SPEAKER_04I did live it. And not only did I live it, but I wrote it in my journal. So I have I have written evidence of exactly what happened very soon after it happened. So um, you know, and he he remembered it quite well. Um, he got home super late playing video games, three, four in the morning, something like that.
SPEAKER_01I don't even play video games. That's what's so funny.
SPEAKER_05That's the funny part.
SPEAKER_03Because I want to say, like, how old were you?
SPEAKER_01But you were married. Yeah, we were married, so I don't think I would guess we don't have any kids yet. No, but I'm 22.
SPEAKER_04Again, I would need to reference my journal, but I'm pretty sure I was pregnant with Maya. And maybe that was part of my age. And that's not on me. I mean, it is. You you know, it doesn't seem to be.
SPEAKER_02She's like, I'm 44 weeks pregnant. Like, you're gonna be fine. Are you in labor? You're fine. You're fine, you're fine. Tell me when the water breaks. Don't bother me right now. Okay, I'm sorry. We're gonna ever do that.
SPEAKER_04No, it's all right. But really, like he, so I don't even know if because I don't think it happened when he got home. I think it was the next day. I'm sure I was asleep at three or four in the morning. And so I think it was kind of joking at first, like, oh, well, geez, what time what were you doing? You got home super late, you know, playing video games. You're a grown man. I don't I don't know.
SPEAKER_01You were upset. I I remember you being not so happy. Like bothered when I was coming to talk to you.
SPEAKER_04So I was coming in kind of already kind of hot and mad, I guess. I don't know. But um, and I for some reason I remember you sitting in the chair like watching TV, and I was standing down our long hallway in our single way.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, because you lived playful living, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Well, yeah, and and it was playful.
SPEAKER_03I like to think that that probably had something to do with even Susie's response.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Anyway, so then so we're talking and probably getting a little mad and bothered, and he's like, he kind of looks at me and he's like, well, it's none of your business what I do on the weekend. And I'm sure my eyes were huge. And then that's when I was like, fine, you can do whatever the where's your bleed you want on the weekend, and I stormed out and I walked not out of the trailer, just to my wrist. What did you throw? I I did throw a shoe. A shoe.
SPEAKER_03I did throw a shoe out of a score at President George uh W.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, similar.
SPEAKER_04Swearing and a th shoe throwing. I was serious. I was really interested.
SPEAKER_01That was the first one. Was it a big swear? No, no. In fact, I'm not even sure it's a swear. Exactly. Well, for you it wouldn't be. I mean, no, I mean it's I used it's probably part of my regular lexicon.
SPEAKER_04But anyway, and then again, and only because I read it in my journal, I it said after about 20 minutes he came in and was just like, I am so sorry. I'm surprised it took me. I can't believe it. You probably were letting me cool down, or you were worried I was gonna throw something else at you.
SPEAKER_01She had another shoe. Most people have two shoes. I just remember those words coming out and me going, What are you doing? Just trying to pull them back and then hold them back and back.
SPEAKER_04But I do have to say, now after 25 years, if he was gone and he was playing video, I'd be like, oh good, well fun. Did you have fun with your friends? And I was reading a great book and I got a good night's sleep. And uh you know, things just don't matter as much, but yeah.
SPEAKER_03When you're 25 years versus New Limited.
SPEAKER_04But maybe it's the things that were said, you know, like the nut it's not your business. Maybe I wouldn't have cared until he said, but it's not your business what I do on the video.
SPEAKER_03I mean, if we're gonna reenact it right now and I'll actually play both roles, um it's like, hey, I mean, we're right here, you know we could do this, but it'd be better for doing to do it. Yeah, like, hey Dave, uh, you came in a little bit late last night. Oh yeah, me and my buddy are some playing games. Oh, great, yeah. Did you have fun? Yeah, great. Problem solved. Done. However, if you hey Dave, uh you came in a little late last night, where were you? Hey, it's none of your business what I do.
SPEAKER_01That is not how it went. Okay, first of all, she knew dang well where I was. She did some less business on her. We were together at the budges watching movies. Okay. And then at about midnight, she said it was time, and I said, well, I'm gonna play some games with Budge here. And so she went home. We lived in just they were very close. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04A few single whites down. So it wasn't hard.
SPEAKER_01So I mean, I don't know, maybe I even walked her home like a shivalger. I doubt she did. I doubt I did. But she got home safe and sound, and I stayed. Okay? Okay. She knew where I was. Okay. But it really is was none of her business. No, I'm the thing is, is do I regret it? Yes. Yes. Do I regret it? No. Because it has been a wonderful story for us over there. Oh, that's true. And I'm glad it happened too.
SPEAKER_04We've had definite laughs over it.
SPEAKER_03When you stormed down, because I, of course, I was raised in a double white, so a little higher end than a single white. Sure. Obviously, like double that. High classic thing. But the one thing about a great double uh single white is they've had that nice long, typically mirrored hallway. So did you like storm down the mirrored hallway? And in my mind, it's mirrored. I don't know.
SPEAKER_04We didn't have mirrors. We did not have mirrors in our hallway, hallway, but I stormed down. I'm pretty sure I went into the bathroom because I I think I locked myself in the bathroom so he couldn't like come into our room and be like, I'm so sorry. Like, I don't know where she went.
SPEAKER_02I stayed looking straightforward. Yes. All of a sudden he's like, I don't think that's an in my business question.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that one was good. Okay. And the funny thing is, it's not the worst thing I said. Oh, I've got some more. Yeah, I need it. So, Heather, let me ask you this. You're on your honeymoon. You're just enjoying the race. You just got married to this Adonis of a man.
SPEAKER_05Oh, absolutely.
SPEAKER_01Thank you. Yeah, well. It's got a nice olive tone to him. Yes. I tan super easily. Now, when you glance over.
SPEAKER_02Oh.
SPEAKER_01What shade of red did you go when you found out he actually didn't have his appendix out? But it was a stretch mark in the same spot of an appendix scar.
SPEAKER_05Oh my gosh. How do you get those words back?
SPEAKER_01We've been there, you and I have been growing. I mean, was it was it um embarrassing or was it did you guys just both laugh?
SPEAKER_05I don't remember after.
SPEAKER_01I remember he cried himself to sleep that night.
SPEAKER_05Exactly. Exactly. I I remember being embarrassed, and I get embarrassed every time he tells a story.
SPEAKER_04Now, I do have to say one thing though. Jason was very nice and attacked you for the first uh question. You just went right in and just attacked Heather.
SPEAKER_03Oh, let's find some others.
SPEAKER_04Let's move on.
SPEAKER_03Let's move on. Again, we can't really necessarily recreate it, but like um, I mean, we could because I still have the stretch marks. I mean, I think once you have them, you have them. I mean, I've been rubbing, is it all month of butter? What do you rub about stretch marks? Christmas butter. I think it's Christmas. Let's go. Peanut butter. Peanut butter sounds delicious. It does sound delicious. But I remember how they're just taking a little pinky finger. Do you remember the pinky finger?
SPEAKER_05I don't remember that. You don't remember anything?
SPEAKER_03And you like kind of scraped it.
SPEAKER_02Like with your beautiful adorable. Like, are you sure? Are you sure? She tried she like licks her thumb. She licks her thumb just to like rub it off. Just rub it off. Yeah, like it's like a little Nutella or something.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, spilled on you.
SPEAKER_03Okay, okay. That's funny. That was a fun one. It is one of my favorite stories to tell. But my wife is so sweet because she I mean, she she loves me in spite of the stretch. I mean.
SPEAKER_01I mean you I'm sure it's a very handsome stretch mark. I'll show you one day. How about right now? Maybe I will. Alright. Well, you know, maybe we should ask the ladies, is there something you really want to clarify at all? I mean, is there something you're like, look, I have to fix this?
SPEAKER_04Oh, I'm sure every episode may have one or two things that we could comment on, but no nothing.
SPEAKER_03Um I don't mean to just I mean I just mean that the June. Um let's see here. Okay. Susie. I need you to take us back. I believe it was um how old is Maya? She's 22. So we're gonna say, you know, 22 years ago, give or take. When you were actually putting her in the car seats from just birthing her, and when Dave said, this also was from episode 21. And Dave.
SPEAKER_01When you said This is worse than the other one, by the way. I thought I was making lemonade out of lemons. You said, put that extra 40 pounds into it. Yeah. As soon as they happen to feel. Oh, your eyes are so her eyes, daggers, man. Dark as night. Yeah. I mean, and she's a wonderful, nice person.
SPEAKER_04But it feels like one of those things you can, you know, if somebody says something, you can say something about a member of your family, or you can, you know, like, but if somebody else says something, you you're like, don't you dare say that about them. So that felt kind of that same like, I can say something about my. Myself, like I can say, oh man, now I'm gonna lose this 40 pounds. But don't you dare anyone else say that to me, right?
SPEAKER_03Everybody in the world should know about. Listeners, I'm like holding my hand up for Dave can't see me.
SPEAKER_04Well, and I wish I wish this one I had written in my journal, just because when we tell the story, again, there's so many questions like why in the world would I be pulling on a car seat um seat belt after giving birth? I should not be just.
SPEAKER_01So you hop out of the wheelchair and then jump into some manual labor.
SPEAKER_04I mean, you're just done.
SPEAKER_01And I'm like, hey, no, he's not standing.
SPEAKER_03He's already on the other side. He's probably actually sitting in the driver's seat and busting with the radio.
SPEAKER_04Wondering what's taking me so long.
SPEAKER_01I look back over my shoulder, hey, can you hurt home walk my program?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, so those details, I oh, I wish we could remember. But definitely the walking out, I'm like, oh, I've just got 40 pounds to lose. Uh oh and then the the pulling of the cards. Sorry, I mean it's it is what it is. But then being on either side of the car and looking in at each other, and well, why don't you just put that extra 40 into it? And uh giving him the exact what he said, the daggers, and don't you ever say that to me again. And he never has, and he never will. Never will never will. And I enjoy every treat in the world, and I love treats, and I always will.
SPEAKER_01You look fantastic. Thanks, honey. Look, listen. Look, again, am I do I regret it? Yes. Do I regret it?
SPEAKER_00How many of a story is that though?
SPEAKER_01It's funny. And she's such she's fine. Yes. I am fine with her. She's fine with it.
SPEAKER_03She's great. Well, listen, you both look great. Um I mean I've got a lot of notes here.
SPEAKER_01I'm gonna go back. Dave, do you I guess. Well, I would just like to ask Heather. Basically, we always try to do something in our pod about the small town's idea.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And so you you meet Jason for the first time and he says, I'm from Grouse Creek. Yeah. First of all, there's no way you knew where Grouse Creek was.
SPEAKER_05Oh, absolutely not.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. No way. So, so have you grown a love for Grouse Creek, or is it still one of those like, I'm not driving three hours? Two hours and a half. You always used to have creatures. It felt like three. And that's one way. Yeah. Yeah. Tell us kind of what your thoughts are on the whole Grouse Creek thing nowadays.
SPEAKER_05Well, I actually don't mind going out there now because it's way slower paced. And we don't even live in very busy paced Millville, but it's way slower paced. But I remember the first time we it was Thanksgiving and we were going to, we were just dating. He was going to his family's for Thanksgiving. I was staying in Cache Valley for low for our family dinner. And I said, Well, why don't I just meet you there after we eat dinner? And he looked at me, he's like, Oh, I could tell you to the mile marker, and you still would think that you were in the middle of nowhere, lost, even if I told you direction.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_05There's no way.
SPEAKER_03That was not a viable solution. I mean, it was sweet of her to offer it. Yeah. But I'm like, again, remember, no cell phones at that point. And even if there were cell phones, no coverage. Yeah. Um and you get out there, it's dark, you're driving along Highway 30, westbound, you haven't seen anything. And then all of a sudden you feel like you're in a Stephen King. Yeah. And then I say, Yeah, take a ride at My Marker 12, and the last 20 miles is on dirt road. She should be just no, how was it gonna work? No.
SPEAKER_05But she was sweet to offer.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, very sweet. You had no idea what you were doing.
SPEAKER_05I had no idea what I was saying I could do.
SPEAKER_03In hindsight, do I regret? I wish I would have done it. Because think of the great store that would have been. Yes. I mean, should you probably wouldn't have been married.
unknownThis wouldn't be her today.
SPEAKER_01So so when you first start dating Heather, how long before you drop that bomb on her that you're from Grouse Creek? Like, we're gonna be going out there three and a half hours. Every night, every weekend.
SPEAKER_03Listen, um, that's a great question. I don't remember when, because she met my family for the first time, not out at my home of Grouse Creek. She met my family, which I thought was a good idea on my part. She met my mom and dad, my sister, my brother was out of town, and most of my extended Kimber family at our Kimber uh family Halloween party. I thought it best that she meet most of us in costumes. It only goes out from there. It only gets better from there. For some of you. Yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly. So, so I don't remember the very when did we go there for the first day? Because we started dating October 13th. Wow. Um Susie, do you know when we started dating? Danny, let's go ahead. Exactly. Uh we had the Halloween party. And then we and I don't even think it was because you hadn't been there for Thanksgiving, as you just mentioned.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I think it's probably Christmas.
SPEAKER_05Christmas was probably.
SPEAKER_03We had a Christmas party out there that but I escorted her like a gentleman. Tuxedo? Yeah. Probably. Tops and tails, so I don't say that.
SPEAKER_04Well, in December, after hearing your sleigh ride story of the mile on a like it's because you escorted her out there in December because there's a lot of snow out there.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that's just scary. I uh um I'm gonna put that video. I I showed the video to Susie. I don't think I showed it to you guys, but like it actually I clocked it. It was a one mile, I know we're going back to our last podcast. Yeah, it was like a one mile ride on a runner sled.
SPEAKER_01That is unbelievable. Because when you told me during that pod, I'm not gonna lie to you, I thought, well, that's an embellishment. Yeah. Nobody rides this runner sled for a mile.
SPEAKER_03I listen, that's fair. I mean, most of the things that I say have always been embellished. I just tell it. Um, I remember one time, now listen, I'm kind of be telling myself here, and I don't want to take your thunder, Dave, here, but like Helen and I had just got married, we were in Cancun, we came back from Cancun, she discovered my my um appendix scar in Cancun. Do you remember when we got to the airport in Salt Lake?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah, I do remember.
SPEAKER_03Well, you take it. I would like to see, because this was also in episode 21. Man, there was a lot of stuff in 2018. Um, and I there was a quote that I thought in my mind that I never vocalized, but I'd like to I'd like Heather to share her thoughts of what happened at the airport. Yeah in Salt Lake on our way home.
SPEAKER_05Right, so we are coming home from Cancun, we land in Salt Lake City, and I don't know what it is about me, but when I pack and I'm traveling, like I am meticulous about the way that I pack my suitcase, the way that I must be a ginger thing.
SPEAKER_01I'm the same way.
SPEAKER_05You can take it out at the hotel, it's still very organized.
SPEAKER_01What about dirty clothes for you? Oh, I have them organized somewhere else. Yeah, seems ridiculous. So it goes seems normal. Yeah, I am on Heather's side of the house.
SPEAKER_05So we get into Salt Lake City and we get our bags, we get out to we were driving a Tahoe at the time, and he opens the back of the Tahoe, opens his suitcase, and just starts chucking things into the back seat. Over the back seat!
SPEAKER_03Oh my gosh. At this point, did you have any because there was a reason, but surely you wouldn't have thought of what the reason was. Did you have any idea of what the reason was?
SPEAKER_05No, I realized what the reason was you were getting your swimsuit out.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, because it wasn't dry. I mean, it had only been in my suitcase on the 12,000-hour flight from Cancun.
SPEAKER_02So I'm like, but for the last hour and a half, I thought it important to air it out. Just in case.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, just how many mold growing up my new uh, you know, but my new swim trunks.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_03You know. Yeah. So that's what I was doing. Um, and so I then then what did you do?
SPEAKER_05And then I quickly said, oh no, no, like and I gathered up everything and at least somewhat organized it.
SPEAKER_03Can we say that you unceremoniously pushed me aside?
SPEAKER_05Probably.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and then that's when I had my thought. Again, things that I learned the hard way, but I didn't vocalize this day. That's the one. You didn't say it out loud.
SPEAKER_05I just barely heard he thought it.
SPEAKER_03Oh. Like just 17 years later.
SPEAKER_0517 years later, I said you heard that.
SPEAKER_03I can remember this as if it were yesterday. I stepped back and she is feverishly putting my wet, sopping wet swimsuit. Well, back into the mold-infested suit that just came out of. And I looked at her and she was just doing it, and I remember thinking, oh, marriage is gonna be a lot harder than I thought.
SPEAKER_04And Heather's probably thinking. Or if he would have just put it in the little laundry bag that they give you the thing, and then it would have been separated from all of the other dry clothes.
SPEAKER_01Again, I'm with Heather on this one. Sorry, sorry. The whole world needs to be with Heather on this one. And most things, actually. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Apple sticker. I know. Apple sticker. Apple sticker.
SPEAKER_01Well, I don't know.
SPEAKER_03I can't remember which episode that's in. I know either, but I actually uh just did that again.
SPEAKER_01That was one of your New Year's resolutions.
SPEAKER_03I know, and I've already busted it, but I've only done it right now. I've been keeping my shirt on for nothing. Well, we'll see how this night goes. Oh, okay, we gotta go, we're gonna have to go back to the apple sticker just to remind people, but I do have a question for Susie. Okay. On a weekly basis, and obviously we can't do it for this year because it's been a New Year's resolution. On a weekly basis, how often does Dave take his shirt off in front of somebody other than yourself?
SPEAKER_04Um, how many times does he want to, or how many times does he actually do it?
SPEAKER_03I will I'll allow both of you to do it. Okay, okay.
SPEAKER_04Um does he want to? Definitely on a daily basis. He'll see someone, he's like, should I take my shirt off? I mean, it's fine. Maybe we should leave it on.
SPEAKER_01Um she always has to talk me down from it. No, no, no, leave it on, leave it on. Leave it on. All right.
SPEAKER_04When he actually does it, I mean it's probably not that often. And and usually in the warmer months, I mean, it's a little cold to be whipping your shirt off in December. And so um, so maybe not as often as he wants to, but probably more often than other people want it to.
SPEAKER_05More people than more often thanks.
SPEAKER_01That's true. But one time is more than most people want.
SPEAKER_03Inquiring minds. Um this feels like I'm just picking it. I'm not picking it up. I have genuine questions. I deserve it. No, no, this these are great, and it was so fun to go back and listen to some of these pods again. Um and maybe Susie doesn't do this. So if it's Susie or if it's one of your kids, or maybe it's Dave, when you're cleaning the drain out in the tub, is it hard to get the Cheetos out along with the hair? Or or will a Cheeto actually dissolve? I mean, how has the plumbing been for the past four times?
SPEAKER_04I mean, the good thing is is Dave eats the Cheeto if it goes in the water. So it doesn't go to the drain, no.
SPEAKER_01So there's been one Cheeto mishap. And there was a goldfish cracker mishap.
unknownOh.
SPEAKER_01Those sog up, yeah, they float. Well, so do the Cheetos. Oh, that's fair. But they sog up a little quicker, those goldfish crackers. You gotta get after them quick. Again, episode 21.
SPEAKER_03I don't think it was actually. No, that one was way bad. The day each Cheetos in the tub.
SPEAKER_04I mean, and it's funny because we talk about the Cheetos a lot, but I mean it comes with a full plate of you know, grilled cheese sandwich and Cheetos and an ice cold coat. I mean, just not just a bag of Cheetos here.
SPEAKER_03The fourth Thursday in November.
SPEAKER_02Dad's like, hey sirs, could could you just plug me up some turkey and mac and tape and gray? I'm gonna take my Thanksgiving dinner in the tub.
SPEAKER_01I mean he likes to go on to something. The thing is, is that tub's not even big enough. I mean, it's a sm why I'm even in there is beyond me. But I can fall asleep in the tub. But if I have Cheetos, they keep me kind of awake. Yeah, I mean, fair enough.
unknownFair enough.
SPEAKER_01And it's not a bad idea. Um I got okay, I got I got actually a couple here for you.
SPEAKER_03Okay, well, and I didn't mean to, you know, yeah, I didn't mean to interrupt you. You go, buddy.
SPEAKER_01Um, okay, I'm gonna do that one in a second. But the the one I wanted to ask is were you concerned that Jason, when you got married, or that even when he asked you to get married, yeah, that he might have already been married at the moment, unbeknownst to him.
SPEAKER_05Unbeknownst to him, unbeknownst to me until five years later that I know that there was a chance.
SPEAKER_01When you heard that story, because this this one, uh this has to be one is it five? Yeah, episode five. It has to be one of the most commented on episodes.
SPEAKER_05I always get people always comment to me about that one.
SPEAKER_01What did you think when you heard about Jason singing in church an Anne Murray song duet with a uh woman who is probably 15 years older?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, 15, 20 years older.
SPEAKER_01Um, and she's in her wedding dress.
SPEAKER_05Wedding dress. I think because I had been to Grouse Creek for four years before I had heard the story, everything until the wedding dress that I could see happening in Grouse Creek.
SPEAKER_03It was a beautiful service ceremony in the words you're looking for. Uh we actually talked about this with some people just a couple weeks ago, but um, yeah, I mean, I would do it again in a heartbeat. Alright, do you regret it? No.
SPEAKER_00Not a chance.
SPEAKER_03Not a chance. Carol's got a beautiful voice. I'm sure she does.
SPEAKER_02Um I mean, I don't really think we're married.
SPEAKER_01That's sort of, I'm with you, Heather. The whole thing, I mean, there are red flags that just keep going up.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_01That I'm like, how did you let that get that far? How did you let it get that far? Multiple times, and then the wedding dress comes out. Yeah. I'm like, you have to stop this. This cannot happen. I can see Jason sitting there in his head going, I don't know. He's so nice. He's like, sure. Oh yeah. Do it. Get married.
SPEAKER_02And I'm like, well, I mean, I mean.
SPEAKER_03Doesn't sound like a horrible idea. I love Anne Murray. And I love the song. It's Can I Have This Dance for the Rest of My Life? It was very tender.
SPEAKER_01And nobody, nobody is disputing it. It's happening in a church meeting. Okay. It wasn't even like, okay, it was in the church house. No, it was the actual meeting. Yeah, it was in the meeting.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I mean, I've heard a lot of things. Yeah, but that the that production was spectacular. Top notch. Spectacular. Thank you. I would like to see that one reprised. Say no more.
SPEAKER_00Make some phone calls.
SPEAKER_03Make some phone calls. Make some phone calls. When we I remember when Heather, it was the very first time that uh Heather came to church with me in her house. Yeah. And it happened to be on a fast Sunday, so I went up to bear my testimony. And there were these sweet, sweet, dear, dear people in my life. Patty Jane and Bobby. And they're just sitting there. Bobby's no longer with us. Love her so much, miss her. Patty Jane, of course, still is. Bobby was a little bit older, and so and Heather just tells me this story after the. Well, you go ahead, you tell it.
SPEAKER_05Well, so you go up there, and they're sitting in front of us.
SPEAKER_03Yes.
SPEAKER_05And um I don't think I've heard this. Watching him go up, and and then sh Bobby leans over to Patty in a stage whisper.
SPEAKER_03But it she thought it was a real whisper.
SPEAKER_05She thought it was a real whisper, but I mean no offense, because she's a little bit older, but yeah, I'm sure the whole chapel is a little bit. At least Pew has heard. She said, Do you think this is the one for Jason?
SPEAKER_01Talking about you?
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_01You lean forward. I hope not.
SPEAKER_02I was like, I don't think. I don't think so. I really know.
SPEAKER_01And after being here, I'm very sure about it.
SPEAKER_03Because I have to be nice because I can't walk two and a half two and a half hours home.
SPEAKER_01It's a long ways out here. It's a long way. It's a long ways. And I'm not riding Bo the Shetland pony all the way back. Look at the guy's poor toenails.
SPEAKER_03Toenails come right out, but he just cut right into his calves. Isn't it weird that a horse has calves? Yes. That seems very strange. I just thought of that. Yeah. Oh, Bo the Shetland pony.
SPEAKER_01What a great one. So when you found out, okay, we're assuming he wasn't married, but how about the baby children kittens that he had in his bed? Folks, what episode's that one, Jason?
SPEAKER_05Oh gosh, one of the first ones. Episode two.
SPEAKER_01Episode two.
SPEAKER_05Still one of my favorite stories.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that one. How how long had you guys been together before you heard that one?
SPEAKER_05Oh. Sometimes it surprises me. Sometimes it new stories still come out. Yeah, you're like, that one was probably one of the first that I heard, though, one of the first few years.
SPEAKER_03I remember telling the stories though, like not realizing that there was anything wrong with them.
SPEAKER_05He didn't think anything was weird about that story.
SPEAKER_01I mean, the first time you told me, my eyes must have been coming out of my face.
SPEAKER_03You mean to tell me you've never birthed I mean not yourself, but like like you've never been laying in your bed and your family cat comes up and nestles into your bosom and then burns a litter of kittens. That's never happened. Never once. You were asleep when all that happened. I was just barely asleep.
SPEAKER_01So did you even hear like the mew mew mew? The grunting. I don't know. Papa Kitty was classy. Come on. Did you hear Papa Kitty counting the 10 and Papa Kitty? Just breathe. And he's thinking, oh, it really smells weird in here.
SPEAKER_04I don't know if he can hear a punch over the microphone, but it did just happen.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, we gotta start recording these. Oh my goodness. I love this is you guys might have to be like like regular guests all the time. I mean, all the stories that we tell me. They're our biggest fans. Um and it was Dave who introduced me to the concept that I remember we were we were at the Olive Garden, the four of us were at the Olive Garden one night, and Dave was telling a story. And he was telling the story. He's like, um, yeah, I mean, and I'll probably get this wrong, so you'll have to clarify it, but the the intent was the same. Like, oh yeah, I mean, you know, growing up in the neighborhood, you know, every once in a while we have to like watch Chuck Singleton, or sometimes we babysit Nikki Bradchley, or Panda Tilt, Tidwell.
SPEAKER_02I'm like, who are these people?
SPEAKER_03They're they're not people.
SPEAKER_01No, they're neighborhood dogs. And I don't know, it was really weird to me that you guys didn't refer to other dogs. I mean, how are you gonna know who's it? I guess Panda. Not a lot of people named Panda. So I can see where you're coming from. Yeah. But, you know, they're the owners. Uh they're part of that family. And I'm with you.
SPEAKER_03I mean, now our dog Max, I refer to him as Max Kimber. It's following as Maxwell Kimber. Yeah, he keeps it classic. Does he have a middle name? I can't decide if it's Well or if it's Max.
SPEAKER_01Well, that's funny. No, but we all had they all had last names. And maybe the people in our neighborhood didn't know they had last names, but I that's what my family referenced them as is Chuck Singleton's out, you better get in the house. He was a big dog, and I was scared of him. He was probably wonderful, but uh he I was in when I get that like do you remember what kind of dog you say? A big dog.
SPEAKER_03He was a hound dog, I think. Okay, hound dog. So not like in miniature snails or something. No, no.
SPEAKER_01I think he was some sort of hunting dog. Okay, alright. Like my dog is now. Almost double dog Simmons. Yeah, I like to call him my hunting dog, but he's about what, 13 pounds of nothing but cuddle.
SPEAKER_04Of anxiety, nail biting.
SPEAKER_01Um little medication candle.
SPEAKER_03Um do you ladies have any favorite episodes? I mean, you're not even prepped for this. I understand that. But do you have any favorite episodes that the Dave and I have thrown down? I mean, listen, how how do you how do you pick one? Yeah, I know.
SPEAKER_04I uh I really do enjoy all of them. I thought your episode eight um with marathons, hot yoga, bike rides, because I I enjoy exercise myself, and so to listen to you guys talk about some of the ones you've done.
SPEAKER_03I still have like a sore muscle from that. Yeah, there's some I don't have too many muscles to get sore.
SPEAKER_04I think anytime you can uh go down memory lane with vacations, that one was a lot of fun.
SPEAKER_01There were some fun ones. You know, I've uh full description. I think you said the same thing today. I think I've only less listened to each episode once after we recorded. Just to see how they turn out, you know? I mean, because we lived them. It's not like we but it's funny how you kind of don't realize some of the stuff you did say. And you're like, oh, maybe I shouldn't have. And when people tell me just around, they're like been listening to your pod, my first reaction is, oh no.
SPEAKER_00And then I really appreciate it.
SPEAKER_01That people are listening. I hope that people are enjoying them and getting some smiles out of them. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And the thing is, is like, listen, these stories, sometimes we worry, we even mentioned earlier today we worry about content of what we've got left going on. But these stories, I mean, they just keep happening. I mean, we had stories growing up, everybody had their own stories growing up, but yet, I mean, these stories, they're I think I mentioned earlier, at all the events that I went to today, I mean, the content is just everywhere, and we're kind of creating all these stories as we go along, which is fantastic. And it's nice to have like my suite. I mean, I'm Heather's quarterback lover, and she's my red-haired, fair skinned beauty. I mean, so we're telling a lot of stories together now, which is fun.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. It's and and I really like when people come and tell me their stories about similar things that we talked about. Because I hope it's generating conversation in families and people are having fun with it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Well, we're gonna have to do this with the ladies again, yeah, because I think that it's important that they get their side out too.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, you I mean, I do again, just I really kind of want to make sure that you all have ample opportunity, because we're probably never gonna get it again, to clarify anything that we may have messed up, or you're just anxious for episode whatever the next one is.
SPEAKER_04I mean, I'm I may or may not know what happens when I sleep at nighttime, but uh I just have to say I have zero recollection of that. I I stand my ground. I stand my own. Did not happen that Dave had, I mean, you must have had some crazy dream, you ate too many Cheetos in the tub that night, your mind was not correct.
SPEAKER_01Some pilot open.
SPEAKER_04But it happened.
SPEAKER_01I happen to be.
SPEAKER_04That is one that the things it's awesome. Out of all the things that people are like, oh, you know, are you embarrassed if Dave says anything? No, not really. Maybe that one will be okay.
SPEAKER_01So I'm gonna there, we don't even need to say the game. No, I'm not that's a teaser. Hopefully, people are gonna jump right to episode 33. The Merry Christmas episode. Merry Christmas.
SPEAKER_00That's right.
SPEAKER_01Oh, that I tell you what, that's it.
SPEAKER_03Merry Christmas, everyone. Well, thanks for joining us. Thanks for having us. I mean, guaranteed this will be our most listened to episode, right, Dave? I would think so. Now Susie Litzmith.
SPEAKER_01Thanks again, folks, for listening to another episode of the Small Towns Podcast. We're pretty sure we've changed your life for the better. If not, well, we'll try again next time.
