Welcome, millions, or perhaps billions, of faithful podcast listeners. We are your hosts Jason Kimber and David Emmons. We'll bring you along with us as we share life stories from our experiences living in small towns, or in Jason's case, an unincorporated community. That's true. Along with genius suggestions for solving the world's problems and a whole lot of laughter. This is the Small Towns Podcast. Hey everybody, uh, time for another podcast with um got Dave Simmons right here with us as always, Jason Kimber, myself. Hello, everyone. And we're back. We love saying that. That's one of my favorite things. I I actually would love to be a disc jockey. Do they still have them? Well, I think so. I don't know, but I want to just say that. I want to buy, and we're back! I I I would like you to just say it anytime you come to my house. Okay. And I'm gonna you and Heather come into the house and say, well, we're back! Yes, you are. Um, exciting time in the world right now because uh, and we're gonna make sure that we release this podcast uh relatively quickly because there's a worldwide event going on right now that I simply love. Something like that. Yeah, that's exactly it, buddy. That's exactly you nailed it, you crushed it. It's the Olympics. Well, the Olympics are a lot of fun. I we we dig them. We we in fact we watch them a little bit too late. And the fact that they're going on in Tokyo right now, the the time change is the time difference is tough. It is because the live stuff for us, we're catching a lot of times in the middle of the night. Absolutely, and you gotta be careful because if you get on social media or if you get even on just a news feed, I I will say a lot of the local news feeds, anyways, they're good about saying, spoiler alert, you know, or we've got the results here for some mobiles or whatnot, but you have to click through if you want to find out. But obviously, kind of a unique year for the Olympics because it is Japan-Tokyo 2020 Olympics, but obviously because of COVID-19, they got cancelled last summer, and so now they're doing it now. Right, and I think it ends this in the next couple of days. Yeah, the next couple of days, finishing up. So hopefully, when this pod actually gets released, it hasn't they haven't been done for too long, but I tell you what, the older I get, the more I watch those athletes, and I'm just amazed at the stuff that they can do. I mean, and and some is some of the kind of not so mainstream sports. Have you watched any of those other ones? Like the canoeers? First of all, I love the word canoe. Canoe is my summertime word. I've been saying canoe. Yeah, I like say it five times. Canoe, canoe, canoe. It's one of those, it's one of those words that becomes dumb after like the fourth time. Canoe, canoe, canoe, canoe, canoe. And it's like the root word of canoodling. It I don't believe it. Because I think that's where like all good canoodling actually happens like in a canoe. Then you swamp it. You ever you ever canoodled in a canoe? Never canoodled in a canoe. I'd like to canoodle in a canoe. Yeah, you should try it sometime. Do you think Susie would like to canoodle in a cleaner? Because if she doesn't canoodle a canoe, I'm not gonna canoodle in a canoe. It just doesn't happen. You can't canoodle with yourself. I mean, that's just horrible. Okay, well, anyways, I saw the canoeers that they kneel have you ever seen that one? They kneel on one knee, they're on one knee, and you got one guy in the front, one guy in the back, and they are just canoeing. Just canoeing like crazy. Powder. Two guys, two guys. Now, they could have more. I don't know. I the only ones I've ever seen have two in there, and their backs and their arms are just ripped. I I that is so true. When you see these athletes so strong, so strong, and it and it doesn't it doesn't really matter. I mean, all of the all of the different events are just just amazing. These these people, these individuals have prepared most of them their whole lives. Yeah. Well, do you prepare for canoeing your whole life? Well, that's a good point. Well, and and I also watched the kayaking. Now, kayaking, you're not on a knee, you're actually sitting down in there, and you don't even see the people's legs. Right. But you see their arms and their back that are just so strong. But it makes me now if they are preparing as kayakers their whole life, I kind of want to see their legs. Do they have bird legs? You know what I mean? No, I mean I think I I think I gotta see them. No, I mean I mean, I gotta see them. You gotta see you have a super strong upper body, but I'm not sure. I think they're just skipping leg day. I don't think so, buddy. I think the whole body's gotta be strong. Even on kayaking? Yeah. You're I mean, you're just you're not using them. Now, some of the some of the rowing they're pushing with their legs. But kayaking, they're just kind of in there. Well like a potato sack race, you know, they're just in the potato sack, but they use the arms. No, I feel like they need I feel like we need to give them a little more credit. I'm you're probably right. I mean, these are these are world-class athletes. But we actually had some new sports introduced this, I believe just this Olympics. Like skateboarding was new. Is that new? I think it was new. I think it was the first year. Sean White, I know he was a snowboarder, but I swear he did some I don't know. I don't want to make myself sound like an idiot. But I swear skateboarding has been around for a while. I don't know. I'm pretty sure we could do a little research. Yeah, maybe even before the pods are all ass Google. Seems like a lot of work. I don't want to do it either. But but it's fun, but it's fun to watch these things. Obviously, this year, um, Simone Biles, who Simone Biles. Unbelievable. Unbelievable, uh, women's gymnastics team. She is the goat. I mean, I'm here to tell you there is a high, near I say 100% probability that they're never gonna refer to me as a goat of anything. Well, we're gonna figure one out. We'll figure out what you're the goat of. Well, maybe you gotta be the goat of something. Maybe you're gonna be the goat of podcasting. I don't know. There's some other people out there. A lot of potters. But she's been amazing. Obviously, she ran through had a bit of struggles this year and sat out a couple of events, but I mean she is just I mean, she I'm I'm not being cheesy here. She's like, she's an inspiration. She's fun to watch. Yeah, she the the strength. The lift. I mean, how high she can get. But you know, those the all those gymnasts, yeah, those guys on the rings, Jason Possible. I don't know. My arms would be still hanging from the the rings and I would be down. Or the or the high bar and they flip and they go around and around and then out of nowhere they turn their hands and their shoulders, they have to be out of socket. I mean, I don't think they are, but it looks like they are. I don't know how you do that. The my look, my my shoulders don't, I'm showing Jason right now. They don't go that direction. You don't got the full range of motion. Kind of hurts like I just pulled a muscle. Yeah, maybe I've thrown too many pitches in my day, but that I that just doesn't seem have you did you see the trampolini? Yes, that one guy got hurt.
unknownWhat?
SPEAKER_00Slided down on the on the uh in springs. Oh whoops a daisy. Yeah, whoops a daisies, right? But I mean they're going like how high are they getting? I don't know, but it looks like really high. Uh last Olympics is when we first saw the the Chinese champion Dong Dong. Right. That's awesome. That is awesome. Dong? I mean, that he's getting up there. He was he was born for the sport. Born for the sport, named for the sport, and the flipping that they're doing. If I went that high, which I could never do, and actually came down and landed, my body would accordion. I would look like an accordion that just and I would go back up in just a big old ball and fall off the thing. Have you tried to jump jump on a trampoline as a 44-year-old man? No, no. Don't do it. No, I'm I I mean, and if I did, I'd be kind of like probably I don't even know if my feet would actually ever leave the mat. Yeah, I did recently just to see. You did? It's terrible. Oh yeah. Uh you get off and you're all dizzy, and I got on there thinking I could still do a backflip, no problem. Oh, wow. Well, I could always do them. Really? And I I got on it, and I thought, first of all, my back is not gonna be okay with this. And I got right back off. Kind of dizzy. It makes me feel pretty embarrassed with myself. Yeah, actually, I take that back because I actually did jump on a trampoline just maybe a few months ago up to my brother-in-law's place. Yeah. Uh Mark, shout out there, buddy, uh, Corvallis, uh, Mark Swenson DDS. Um and I was just out there playing around with the kids. They want to play crack the egg or whatnot, but I wasn't trying no flips, no bad. I wasn't trying anything. Yeah. Well, did you know in trampolining, they actually are measuring flight time. Like how long you're in the air. Oh, really? If you're measuring that, you know you're up there and you're in the air for a long time. A long time. Just all the way up there. Uh but and I feel like you need to wear some supportive undergarments. Oh, for sure. I mean For sure. Like extra strength. Yeah, because I mean, you're like I don't want to make up a number here, but like like 20 feet in the air? It's gotta be higher. I would think so too. It's gotta be higher. Those guys are up there. And their things are just flying around, and you just you've gotta support yourself. Uh yeah, listen, because if not, it's nothing but heartache. Nothing but heartache is lots of aches. There's definitely aches, and there's gonna be needs need to be some ibuprofen. But when you're watching the um gymnastics on the floor, and they're flipping and they're flying and they're everything, and the guys in the the commentators are like, oh, that's gonna cost them a tenth. What did I miss something? Yeah, oh I actually read the funniest move because you're like, you're seeing these professional gymnasts create this routine, and I'm getting the tingles, and I'm like, oh my gosh, this is so amazing. And all of a sudden you hear from the answer, oh three tenths. That'll be three tenths. That's a big one. That'll be three tenths. Well, I don't know. I I think they pretty much just jumped up, spun around three times, and landed it. And they land like within like a gnat's fanny of the outside line. Yeah, I guess you gotta stay in those lines. That's a three tenths. That's three tenths. Three tenths. I don't want three tenths off. You can't be giving three tenths away. Nope, and they give three tenths here and there. I and there's another, I watched the guys the other night. How about when they're on their they fly in the air, they land on their stomach on that mat and then bounce into another something. I I know that's possible. No, and then they're laying flat on their stomach, and their arms are as wide as they can go, and they move into a handstand from that position. I don't it's just it seems like black magic. Yeah, it's mind-blowing. Okay, let's talk about swimming. I would drown before even making it one lap. Wouldn't that be so fun? Like, if they'd let like a guy like you and I just we'll take the outside lane. You know what I mean? Can I can I wear a regular swimsuit? Oh no, listen, buddy. Listen, just just wear it. Be loud and proud, you know what I mean? I've heard people tell you how funny it would be to have just a regular dude. Yeah. Just to give us an idea of what they're doing. Because have you ever uh even some of the track and fill, like they're I'm like, it doesn't look like they're going that fast. Come on, pick it up. Pick it up. Can you imagine trying to do the the vault? Jason running down the lane trying to hit that thing. Well, first of all, I would run out of air long before I got to the mat. You're running your very hardest. Or how about the palma horse? When they're can you I can't even hold my body onto that palm horse. Oh hey, there's nothing to chalk in the world. Can you walk the length of a balanced beam? Do you think you could walk the length of a balanced beam? I think I think I could I think I could walk it. I mean, I'd have to have my eyes open. Well, they get to have their eyes open too. They don't blindfolded me. I mean that would be a cool trick. That would be cool. I think I could maybe walk the distance, but I told you in a previous pod, I feel like I'm a decent athlete. You are, you're a good athlete. But but to the balance that it requires, like when I went to a yoga class, I I can't. They say get up on the one leg or whatever, and I'm going over pretty soon. Well, and let's be honest, they're not walking the beam. They're jumping the beam, slipping on it. Unbelievable. It it it boggles the mind. Can you do a but can you do one butterfly stroke? You know, the big one. I do. I mean, I don't. And you're you're pulling. I I mean I I could I bet you can't. I I would probably just sink to the bottom. I got an above-ground pool in my backyard. Okay, let's try to. I'd like to see you do one. We're gonna take some of these podcasts into the field. We really do. How can we gotta figure out a way to be able to go on the road? But I bet you you to be able to pull your arms out of the water and go in that butterfly motion and get him down. I bet you can't do maybe you can do one, but you're not doing two. Maybe one, and I'm that's gonna be heavy on the maybe. But that does not stop me. Every time I'm in a pool, I'll go up, maybe I'll go on the diving board like I'm gonna do something real cool. Yeah. And I'll do that whole Michael Phelps, like I'll throw my arms up and then like kind of slap myself on the back. Oh yeah. You know what I mean? Kind of that wing spanning. Like you're gonna do exactly you're gonna get a medal. But I'm here to tell you, like, if I were in an Olympic competition of swimming, like I would barely be off the it's not a podium, but the platform, the deck? Yeah. That you know, like I would first of all, I couldn't even dive in. I'd probably dive in, fall in, belly flop it. They'd be on their second leg back before I even got in the water. I'm concerned about flipping at the other end too. I'd have to plug my nose. Oh yeah, I'd for sure get water my nose. We have those nose plugged. Maybe some silly putty in our ears and get swimmers here. But I might have to have like a like a like a snorkel. I know that that twisting of the of the neck to try to get the breath. I can't get that breath. No, I don't either. I actually just hold my head out of the water at all times. All the time. It's more of a doggy paddle, really. It would be really funny to see that. Yeah. Or I I honestly I could not swing on those bars on or the uneven bars, the way they flip from back and forth to the other. They let go and then they catch the next one. Okay, how about diving? You want to do synchronized diving with me? No. Again, we'd have to wear the suits. We would have to wear the suits. We'd stand up there, we'd walk, we'd be like, one, two, three, and then they would just go. I mean, there the the synchronicity, is that a word? That you made it up. That feels good about it too. I'll do a fact check there with my mother-in-law Dana. Um, synchronicity of those guys. Synchronization. Synchronization. That feels better. That's probably the word. It feels better. It boggles the mind. And then all of a sudden you hear the announcer go, oh, I'm like, that was perfect. Yeah. Well, he splashed a little bit. Exactly. How about when you're trying to synchronize dive with a partner and your partner blows it? Do you kind of get upset with him? Be like, you blew it. I've been searching for gold my entire life and you cannonball over there. Now we got another four years before we get a shot at this. I'm 35. I'm not gonna make it. I actually think the oldest, she's a gymnast, I can't remember which country she's from. 48 years old this year. Really? Yeah. Where would she the gal that because last Olympics there was a gal, I think, from Romania that was a vaulter. And she would and and if she came back, she because she was the oldest then. I I think I uh again I I would welcome a fact check on this stuff. I think we're making most of this up. Yeah, actually. But but it's just it just boggles the mind. Remember a few years back when Usain Bolt was like the fastest. Well, I think he probably is the fastest man in the world. Unbelievably fast. Let me ask you this question, because you are an athlete. Yeah, well, look at me. Yeah, you look great. I think so. You feel great. I feel good, look good. Got a haircut. Have you um like have you have you participated in any track and field events? Like high school days or no? No, really? Never, never. Okay. Well I have a buddy though. Okay, please, yeah, please. We were based during high school, I played baseball. Okay, and baseball was happened at the same time in the school year as track and field. Okay, sure yeah. So you can do both. Yeah. But I have a buddy, old Corey Kohler, box. If you're out there listening, we called him Box. Okay. Um fast, really fast. But fast enough where I feel like some of the track coaches was like, hey, you should you should come and run that. But he was playing baseball and he's a great baseball player. Yeah. And a great basketball player and a great football player, just a really good athlete. Really good athlete. And I mean, Corey could steal bases as well as anybody, just that guy. Wow. So, anyways, one day we're walking away from practice, and we have to walk past the track meet going on. And I don't know if Corey, he'd have to validate this for me, because from my perspective, he just decided I'm gonna go do this. But he had to have talked to somebody, borrowed somebody's track shoes, or did he run barefoot? Anyways, because he had metal cleats on for baseball. Sure. Anyways, I think he borrowed somebody's track shoes, walks over and runs the hundred and wins it. Are you kidding me? Just wins it. I mean, I no, I that's that's next level speed, and then these guys, these Olympians, yeah, uh that is we you can't tell how fast they're going by watching on TV. No, not even close. Because they're they're running these these sub four-minute miles. Oh, yeah. The long distance stuff. Can you imagine? No. I mean, Susie, I was thinking about taking the dog for a walk and with Susie and then just walking up here to your house. Yeah. How far is your house from mine? I'm gonna say maybe half mile. Oh, not even. Yeah, yeah. Core mile. I I said, no, I don't I'll be driving. Yeah, for sure. Yeah, I mean, I'm not gonna go up the Jason. Yeah, I'm not gonna go to Jason's lace and pods and then walk home tonight. That's just a little too far. Jeez, I'm already tired just talking about that. Yeah, I know. I could use some Gatorade. Well, I did uh in Grouse Creek, we we had a track meet every year. Really? Oh yeah. And it was always between at least I think in in in like earlier years it would be like small towns of Grouse Creek, Park Valley, and Snowville. Oh, they'd come together. We would rotate each year going to a different place. But by the time I got in school there, it was just Grouse Creek uh and Park Valley. Can't imagine the competition was really that stellar. Oh, I'm here to no, listen, it was stellar. Did you have to raise against a kid with one leg? Listen, I'm here to tell you, like um easy to drop some names, but some of them Park Valley kids fast. Really? I mean, it had some Pugsleys, I mean they were just fast. Well, maybe they're fast compared to compared to what? Well, listen, let me tell you, and and it wasn't like you had to pr pick your event, like you just did them all, like I did the shot put. Okay. Um I did several. Did you actually have a shop put or was it like a cantaloupe? It was actually it was just an orange. No, full blown shop put. We do some dashes, you know, 50 yard, 50 yard dash. Okay. Some relays. Pull a hammy. I would pull it. If you use 50 yard dash right now. Oh, I would hammies, right? Take me to the ER. Yeah. But hammy would go out. Some guys just walking around and like, I feel like my hammy's about to go. But we're talking, we're running on like dirt roads or a grass. I mean, there's we don't have a track and field out there. No. We have to have a proper cemetery, by the way. Can you put some grass in that cemetery? Come on, buddy. It's it's like boot hill. Um we had like long jump, high jump. I love the high jump. I'd like to see that. Yeah, I would too. I would like to see you high jump. Did you go over forward or did you actually try to go backwards? Oh, back. I mean, it's kind of You can't bend your body in that shape. Well, you'd get at 44, but I sure could at like 12. You were strapping. And then we have like um, you know, like uh how many baskets? We had like this line drawn around the, you know, how many how many buckets could you make in two minutes? I mean. I mean, that's not really wait, what? Yeah. What it it's it you bet like you're weaving baskets or you're like shooting baskets? Okay, I thought you were actually trying to weave a basket. How many baskets? Well, I don't know. It's not a rendezvous. I'm not having a rendezvous. But so we would do this every year. Every May, end of the school year, we always get together. And of course, we've got ribbons. I mean, and I don't know if you know this or not, but like once you get into like fifth, sixth place ribbons, they're like they're like different colors. Chartouche. You get the violet color. They make a sixth place, yeah, they sure do. They sure do. I was pretty fast though, buddy. In my ninth grade, like I ran. I like to go back, I wonder if they kept records because I was pretty fast. Well, like, how fast? I mean, I don't know. Faster than the slowest guy. Yeah, exactly. Like if I was getting chased by a bear, I wasn't the one. You wouldn't get eaten. Exactly. That's all you gotta be. That's the one gonna be faster than the slowest. And you need to just win that ribbon. But it was a lot of fun. So we do that, and then and then we would then we would not everybody, but those of us who wanted, maybe I don't know if there's a qualifying event, but we'd come into either Brigham City or Tremont and have a pentathlon. Whoa. Yeah, yeah, again, it was just awesome. Now you you you just picked the events that that you were good in. But uh I love potato sack racing you would do. Three leg racing. You and cousin Moe's, you would just strap hey, hey, can I be on the left this time? Yes, all my strength is about. My right leg is a little lame. I'd like to go left if it's okay. But I those track meets just just great memories, and it uh it was you know, because you grew up playing, you know, little league softball, stuff like that. But well, whoa. Sorry, sorry, I will back up. If David, if David Webb just heard you say you grew up playing little league softball, he would turn this pot off in two seconds. He might punch me in the face when I see him, and I don't even know. He's no many. In in a way, I kind of wouldn't blame him. Well, I'm sorry. It's okay. You get played the baseball. Little league baseball, thank you. No problem. I mean, next I'm gonna say what you like. T ball. We did play. We call it clinic ball, which is weird. Oh really? But it was t ball. It was t ball. Yeah. Yeah, but you know, we didn't have those opportunities, right? So you're just uh you're just crushing it at the annual track meet. Did you get a blue ribbon? Yeah, I got a few blues. Which which was your blues? Mm. It's hard to it's hard to remember, but I remember getting a blue this one race. I think it was uh You feel good about that race, don't you? Oh yeah. I mean it's it's it's cousin Rico, like I could throw Uncle Rico over those mountains right over there. I bet you beat Zuckerman's famous pig in that race. You beat Charlotte with Charlotte. They called it Charlotte. Charlotte couldn't run. No. Got eight legs, she can't run. Well, I would like to have seen you run in the old grass creek. I tell you what I'm gonna do. Okay. First of all, it's grouse, but close. Grass. It felt like it felt like grass. I would like to hear the footage. I'm going to we talked about this in one of the uh earlier podcasts, but I you and I are gonna start putting more pictures on the Instagram. Yeah. And I've actually got some pictures I'll scan in. You'll just see me just running. And I had a thick head of hair. Oh, I bet. Lustrous. Thick, thick head of hair. My mom, I mean, I just loved her dearly. All I wanted was a short buzz cut. Like the flat top. Yeah, flat top, just short. I mean, my buddy Curtis Bretton Kinney. Like Yvonne Drago. Exactly. They all had them. My mom, I had to have a part. Well she did did she blow dry your hair for you? Not well, not needed, but it definitely, I mean, it it could have, it was long enough that it could have used a nice, you know, blowout. I mean, if you and a round brush. Nice round brush. I I'm gonna I'm actually excited about uh putting some of these pictures up on the Instagram. Did we I have I sent you the picture of me wearing my belly shirt and my short shorts. Oh that probably should go on the Insta. It's just not a great picture. I mean, it was a bigger photo and I had to zero in on me. Yeah, but that's okay. I I mean we're I I think the the desired effect will be a good one. It's a good outfit. Now, how my parents let me step out the door that day is still beyond me, but you know, they I'm sure I'd like to think it was the style for at least a day or two. Yeah. And I rocked it. Yeah, I um because we're gonna see when we see these pictures. I mean, I've got my tube socks. I mean, I think you had the same. Yeah, my gray tube socks were base almost knee-high. Well, now for the track meet, so track meet, we were the ground street cowboys. Okay, that makes sense. And then I want to say it was the Park Valley. Gosh, I'm so embarrassed. I should know this. I'm kind of embarrassed too for you. Yeah. Um maybe they were the it was the Buckaroo. Well, we were the Ground Street Buckaroo. I can't, anyways. I don't know. You said you were the Cowboys. We were the Cowboys, maybe they were the Buckaroos, but it almost feels like too similar. I can't remember. But I do like the idea of being a Buckaroo. Well, listen, and our colors were red and white, and they were blue and white. Okay. So like, you wouldn't have outfits, right? So like I'd got those red shorts with kind of the white racing stripes. Racing stripes on the sides, and probably way shorter than they should have been. But it was the 80s. Yeah, well, you wear them short. Yeah, you do. I mean, because I was running. Yeah, and well, you gotta be unencumbered once you're running. I was running! Little force gumped there. And uh then a cool like t-shirt. I mean, it was just a t-shirt, but it had like a picture of mesh. No mesh. Hmm. Yeah, like mesh is the way to run. Yeah, I mean unless it's chafes. And you get real cool tans that way, too. Yeah, you probably could. Gosh, those are those are my glory days. Well, the all I know is these athletes that we're watching in the Olympics are they're just wrapping up are unbelievable, and it's been a lot of fun to watch that. Yeah, I do love uh as we kind of wrap this up here, we're getting uh close on time. Winter or summer on the side? Summer, honey. Wow, you didn't even have to think about it. No, I didn't even think about it. Summer. But I'm a summertime guy anyways. You are a summertime guy. I mean most gingers aren't. Well, I would well, we're fair skinned. Burn, peel, repeat. That's what we do. Exactly. I although winter, watching those guys do that slalom down that mountain. It's fun. I mean, you're just waiting for crashes, aren't you? No. I'd like I like when they just oh didn't quite make it and they end it end up going into that little wicker fence that they got set up. Or how about when they It's not wicker, but it's mesh. I don't know what that means. It's plastic. Plastic. But when they're whipping around those those flags, I feel like that would hurt. Yeah, they're kind of popping their own shoulders on it. But I am very impressed with the uh ice skaters. You don't you don't jump on ice, period. No, you don't. No. It's a bad idea. No. And then like the speed skaters. Those guys have big legs. Yeah, and they are like they are cruising and it's like they're always turning. It's it's like roller derby on ice. Yeah, exactly. Really? But the when the ice skaters land the triple Lutz on the triple sow cow. They don't quite make it around. Oh, that'll be a tenth. Yeah, what was that last one you called? Triple Sal Cow. Double double sal cow. I don't I don't even know if I'm saying it right, but I know I've heard it. It sounds good. The triple lutz. I got my merit badge, ice skating merit badge. You did? Yeah.
