Dave’s long time childhood friend and fellow small town boy Scott Budge visits the studio! This guy has it all! Complete with a BB gun wound to the arm… BB might still be in there… who knows?
Welcome millions upon millions, perhaps billions, of faithful podcast listeners. We are your hosts, Jason Kimber and Dave Simmons. We'll bring you along with us as we share life stories from our experiences living in small towns, or in Jason's case, an unincorporated community. That's true. Along with genius suggestions for solving world problems and a whole lot of laughs. This is the Small Towns Podcast. Alright, folks, ladies and gentlemen, uh we are back. We are back. Dave, it feels like it's been a long time. It has been a long time. I mean, it doesn't even have to feel like it. It is. It has been. Because if we were going to, again, a little peek behind the curtain, see how the sausage is made, so to speak. Yep. We actually haven't been in the studio for several weeks. Is that all it's been? Well, it's been at least several weeks, but what constitutes several? Because it's been It's more than a few. Yeah, it's been like five weeks, six weeks. At least. Because remember we had like a bunch, like we had sat down and we recorded a bunch. We had some, what do we call it, like in the can or whatever? Yeah. After we had it ready to go. And so we released them, you know, but it's been a busy summer. It's been a while since we've been here. But if there ever was a time that we were back, I guys, I don't know if you can sense and hear and feel my giddiness through the phone. Through the phone. That's not a phone. Through the microphone. It's a big day. And Dave, I don't know, I don't know what else to say other than please just share with our loyal listeners the magic that is of TX.
SPEAKER_02Here it comes. So there are a handful of people in the world that I've thought we gotta get this guy on the pod. Okay. Cousin Moes is up there. We gotta get cousin Moe's. Oh, he can get on his. He knows we call him Cousin Moose, right? I don't think he does. Whoops. His cousin Curtis, who really isn't his cousin.
SPEAKER_00He is my cousin. But he reminds you.
SPEAKER_02Jason tells me stories about this guy, and I'm like, he reminds me of cousin Mo's on the office, you know, this guy that's running around the beat fields.
SPEAKER_00And he's got a beard, too. Yeah. Which would be like a big bushy beard. We gotta get cousin Curtis one of these things. He is my cousin.
SPEAKER_02And to all of your peeps out there who would hear cousin Curtis, I don't listen most. Cousin Curtis's voice come across on their listening enjoyment.
SPEAKER_04Yes.
SPEAKER_02They would be equally as happy as what all my people are gonna be feeling right now. I can't wait. Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to introduce you to the incomparable. Is there another adjective here I can use? Indominable. Indominable. Indomitable Mr. Scott Budge. Welcome, babe. Thank you.
SPEAKER_00Hey guys, this isn't this isn't like he isn't on the phone.
SPEAKER_02He is live in the audio in the studio tonight. Yep, all the way from Austin, Texas. He popped into town and we went and got some grub at El Toro Viejo. Which, by the way.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, the angry bull. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And it could get angry.
SPEAKER_00We never know. I'm nervous because we are actually in a very confined spot. Yeah, well, I'm gonna be okay. I'll crack the window if needs to be.
SPEAKER_02Well, I just I'm never I've never been this excited about anything in life, and I've had four children. That's a lot of pressure. That's a lot of pressure. Sorry, Sue. She's fine. She's gonna be fine. She's probably as excited as I am. So uh Scott has come into town. Uh he moved out of town on a sad day years ago, and they've galloped around the country from Albuquiki first. El Paso. Oh, El Paso. El Paso, Texas. Same difference. It's the same place. It's out in the desert. Unless you live in there.
SPEAKER_01From then where? From uh El Paso to Phoenix. Oh, I remember I came and saw you there. 120 degrees.
SPEAKER_02I got off the plane and I thought I have just walked into an oven.
SPEAKER_00Well, listen, when it's 120, I mean, you you got the fat running down the back of both legs. Oh, yeah. And the front of my leg. That's just shins. But all those sit there. And we ought to do a whole podcast about, like, you know, you got swack, which is sweaty back. Yep. Well. Have you ever had swatten? Oh. Swell sweaty belly button. Oh, for sure. That's so gross. It's like looking into the eye of the storm.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's a sweat. It's a sweat.
SPEAKER_01There's lots of buttons. So from Phoenix. So from Phoenix to Charlottesville, Virginia. That's beautiful. Gorgeous.
SPEAKER_02We tried to catch uh fireflies one night. We didn't have to. That was one of the funniest nights. Were you skipping and holding hands while you're doing it? That's an idea.
SPEAKER_03Can we have a butterfly mat too?
SPEAKER_02We were trying our darndest. I thought, well maybe if we cut if I poke some holes in the top of a ball, I might be able to make it home, and then I could have fireflies in my own backyard.
SPEAKER_00There's fireflies in the valley. Did you know that? No. Yeah, Nibbly, Nibley Park, right? And when we were living down in the apartments while we're building this home, I don't know what the name of the park is, but it's a Nibley. It's Firefly. It is like a legit firefly. It's only a very short window. Um wow. Well, well, I mean this is okay, guys. This is a little embarrassing right now because I am not a native to Cache Valley. And the both of you are. Yes.
SPEAKER_01I have never heard of fireflies in the fireflies in the valley. I think he's got it.
SPEAKER_00I don't even need to fact-check this guy. I I think he was eating some mushrooms, and something weird happened. That's the best, that's what fireflies like to eat. Um, sorry, go ahead, but Virginia.
SPEAKER_01So Charlottesville, Virginia, beautiful. Virginia, gorgeous place. Then to Jacksonville, Florida. That was a gorgeous place. That was a fun place too. Yeah. Then to Tulsa, Oklahoma. Where his neighbor was Garth Brooks, basically. Garth Brooks? Met him, shook his hand. No, are you kidding me? Yeah. Well, I manage malls. So he would come out to the mall, Woodland Bridge Mall. Because he was he was a man of the town. I was gonna say, is Garth Brooks doing malls these days? No, he was just these days. He shot regular. Trisha was at yeah, Trisha was at one store, he was out in the common area. And so yeah, he'd come all the time. He was a man of the town. The guy was great. And just you could approach him, you could talk to him. Nobody, because he's in town all the time, but you'd never, you'd never, you know, nobody would go up and rush up to him and paparazzi and all this stuff. And so he easy that's how I just went up, shook his head. Garth, big fan here.
SPEAKER_02Way to be a good one. Been here at Contra?
SPEAKER_01We talked for a little bit. Did you tell him how much we used to sing in Jason Civic? I started singing to him. Did you? I broke out into Colin Baton Rouge.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but you know, he didn't have it. I mean, just the other night at a hometown football game.
SPEAKER_02We went to, Susie and I went to the Garth Brooks concert here just a couple weeks ago. Did you really? You've been to a show of his? Yeah, in Tolta. Yeah. Well, if he's playing in front of his home crowd, I bet he goes next level.
SPEAKER_00Well, it was a good show. I met Butch for the first time literally 30 minutes ago, and his your stock level just went skyrocket. Like you guys, you and Garth are like best friends. Yeah, basically. Well, I'm gonna call him after the show. I mean, is there any chance he could do a cameo on here? Because we need to really come. You're gonna see this is kind of how this pod goes, but we are getting back too, because you're you're you're not coming from Oklahoma today.
SPEAKER_01That's no, so after Tulsa was Austin, so Austin, Texas. We've been there for the last four years now. That's gorgeous too. You've seen some great places. Great places. Austin's fantastic. Great to represent the listeners of the podcast from Austin, Texas.
SPEAKER_02Do we have listeners on Austin?
SPEAKER_01I will tell you. I was sitting on a bus bench, South Congress Avenue, and this bus goes by, and there's Dave and Jagsney on this right on their uh you're on the side of the bus. And it's got small towns on it, and I'm like, gosh, these guys maybe we do have merchants. We're next level. We're next level. It is the next level, and it feels like I'm in Rush Limbaugh's studio while right here tonight.
SPEAKER_00Well, listen, I've been telling my girls for years now that uh their dad is an influencer. Well and now I'm basically best friends with God Brooks. Exactly.
SPEAKER_01You're all over Austin, you're on the sides of buses.
SPEAKER_00So it's good. So he's he's gone from small town USA. Okay, uh, but that's my question. It's like small town USA Providence, but you know, no, he's a river heigzer. Oh, okay. He grew up in River Heights. That's like Apple Days and stuff like that.
SPEAKER_01Are we Apple Days in No, no Apple Days in the River Heights? Sorry. River Heights, the tidy town USA.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, what the award.
SPEAKER_01Well yeah, we're I think it's every year. It's the tidy town.
unknownProbably.
SPEAKER_00Sometimes I drive through River Heights and I'm thinking, hmm, it is a tidy town. But all those other places uh obviously I'm assuming big cities. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Okay. Yeah. But did you so let's talk about River Heights for a minute. It's a great place to grow up. Fantastic place. Awesome. Love River Heights. Right around the corner from my grandma.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_02Greta and Dell, right around the corner.
SPEAKER_01I mean, those two are pillars of the community.
SPEAKER_02Did you know that my grandma she's now in a in a senior center. Okay. Thriving, by the way. She dominates bingo. She we go visit her and she's like, I I win at bingo all the time.
SPEAKER_00I can see your grandma kind of like maybe just like hanging out around the tables, looking for some old schmuck to walk in.
SPEAKER_02She's dominating, she's dominating at the bingo. But she was the longest living resident of River Heights. Wow. She was literally born in that, you know, that little Sinclair little. So just to the east of that, there's a little home, and then the next one, she was born in that home. Right? Like literally born. And she's lived, she lived in River Heights her entire life.
SPEAKER_01Wow. Yep. So obviously, there the entire time I grew up, you knew Greta and Dale very much. They lived at the edge of the big field in the middle of the block that we'd always walk through. It's where I received a scar on my forearm because I was throwing rocks at kids and got shot with a BB gun.
SPEAKER_00But uh stop there's a couple of things. I need some notes because I want to talk about grandmas, and I also really want to talk about you. Okay, I'm just gonna restate what I heard. You were throwing rocks at little kids, and one of them pulled a BB gun on you and shot you. Yes.
SPEAKER_04We were how old are these kids?
SPEAKER_01They were they were uh they were uh they're the same age as us. In fact, they were just some friends of ours, but they were up they were up about 20, 30 yards in front of us. Get ready. When you're a kid, I thought, oh, I'm just gonna pick up some rocks, I'm gonna start throwing them at them. So I started throwing the rocks, and I was in a good stride of a throw, you know, the arms exposed, and he pulled the gun off his hip.
SPEAKER_02What?
SPEAKER_01And turned around and shot it off the big gun pissed. No, it didn't. He had already had it cocked. He pulled the rock 20 times. I guarantee he was a red rider. And he pulled it off the hip. Boom, shot, no aim, boom, right in the old bicep. And so we had to go to go to his house and we squose it out and pops out of the arm.
SPEAKER_00You and the baby lodged in the fleshy part of your arm? Yes, lodged in there.
SPEAKER_01So I could feel I squose the arm, could feel the baby inside. The hole is there. Do you still have it? Just you want to take a look? That's a nice one. That's a bicep. There it is. Oh, it's right there. I see it. Yeah, and so we take it.
SPEAKER_00Uh fellow listeners, we're gonna take a picture of that, we're gonna put it on the gram. That's a good look.
SPEAKER_02Here's what I don't understand. So he shoots you, and he's like, Well, let's go to my house and get that out. That's a gentleman. That's a gentleman. Who was this guy? You mind throwing him in the under the bus? We've thrown lots of people. Fred Peterson. Of course.
SPEAKER_01Frederick, I just son of Ross Peterson, you know. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00I think you're fine because the statute of limitations. Yes, yeah. Or statue. Legal statue here. It's a statue of limitations of logs that's passed.
SPEAKER_02You tell me Frederick, I'm like, okay, I can see it. Yeah. He's a great guy. Great show. He'll shoot you.
SPEAKER_01Well, deserves. With a show. I was throwing off. I was gonna say, this is not on Frederick. That's why there was no love loss between the two. We were thrown rock.
SPEAKER_00I take the blame. Okay. Well I mean, he had a don't bring a knife to a gunfight. You know what I mean? Don't bring a rock to a BB gunfight.
SPEAKER_01But there's one thing for sure. I could have gone to Greta's house and she would have just stitched me right up, given me probably some good sugar cookies, and sent me on my way.
SPEAKER_02Little lemon, lemon, lemon. She had a drawer of toys that we used to play with too. Did you ever see that toy where it was it was like little pegs? All you have is a little hammer and you hammer down the pegs and then you turn the thing over and you hammer them down again.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_02I played with that thing all the time. Even when I was a grown kid, it's just unsatisfying. Yeah. Maybe I should actually build some. Like with a real knife. You've got skills.
SPEAKER_01You've got some woodworking skills. You've got some skills. I've seen you in the case. You guys are both looking at me. You're telling me the truth. And I would use a Stanley screwdriver. That's low. Yeah, what happens? Talking about this other stuff.
SPEAKER_00This is not. I don't see. I don't know if you fill us. That's on Mark. That's on my dad. That's on Mark, actually. I've said that ever since you told me the story, that is on Mark. Yeah. And he tries to be a good thing. It's his fault. Yeah, that's true. I mean, it's the same thing. Again, it is his fault. And I'll kind of blame my own dad for not teaching me how to throw baseball. Yeah. Because you know, Butch here is all saying, I'm you is it Butch okay or do you prefer Scott? Oh Butch is great. Okay, because I feel comfortable with Butch. But just saying, like, you know, he's throwing a rock, he's saying the whole arm is exposed, and I'm like, what does that even mean? Well, because obviously Dave taught me how to throw a baseball.
SPEAKER_02He couldn't throw a ball over a house. I couldn't throw a ball over a house. See, that's my same. I heard that and I'm like, you're kidding me.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And it wasn't, it didn't help the fact that right before I tried, um, and I'm not saying anything, but like Heather did it, Cray did it, and then Allie, uh, Cray and Jenny's at that time, maybe 12-year-old daughter. Yeah. She did it. I mean, everybody who's anybody can do it. But I couldn't do it. And Dave wouldn't believe it.
SPEAKER_02Couldn't throw a tennis ball over a house.
SPEAKER_00And I tried so hard that I split my shorts right in the middle. Right in the middle. I mean, like, right open. All the thank goodness Cray was there with some duct tape. And he, I mean, he patched me up, I was fine, but I couldn't, I still couldn't, I couldn't throw that ball back.
SPEAKER_02What you sometimes don't talk about the first throw you attempted.
SPEAKER_00I didn't know. Didn't you break something? Well, I didn't. I well, I would have broke something. First, we had a baseball, because that's what we were throwing, right? Yeah, and that's true. And and their garage was open, and my first throw lodged right into the the license plate of their car. In the garage. You gotta understand. And I'm trying to throw it over a house. Yeah, you can't even put your light on the garage. At some point you've got to release. Yeah, you do. And then I gotta let it go. I started to let it go a little bit more, then they had a window up high, and Jenny was like, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. This isn't going how anybody envisioned. So she took the baseball away from me and gave me tennis ball. Which seemed a little more supervised. And then I threw probably, I don't know, threw my weak little arm out that night, never once getting it over their rambler house. It's not like it's a two-story. But he worked with me.
SPEAKER_02But I heard the story, and I'm like, this can't be. I mean, what kind of friend am I to not at least help the man learn how to throw a ball? Right. So we were. We were in my backyard with a bucket full of baseballs. Oh my god.
SPEAKER_00I was like, I'd call him up and like, hey Dave, you want to you want to go for a catch?
SPEAKER_02You want to have a catch? I've got a bucket of balls. Come on, Dave. So I had a well, I had been coaching a lot of baseball and I had a big old bucket of baseballs. And so now, look, he would throw them and we would work. I would throw them back, not to him, because catching comes later. Oh, the little baby steps. You're being ridiculous. Or you had the bucket.
SPEAKER_00I had the bucket and uh and I was throwing them to your boys, and I I gotta hand it to them most of the time. They were they were shagging those balls so impressively. Because I mean it wasn't like I was throwing them to them. I mean, I was trying to. You gotta be on your toes. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02It's like having a catch with David Webb. It's not easy. It's not easy. And I hope he hears this. Why? I mean, he played college baseball, and I st he's still not easy to play catch with. What? He just the aim is just not there. Oh you don't want him to throw beef back batting practice to you. He'll hit you.
SPEAKER_00Oh, okay, okay.
SPEAKER_02Sometimes that's intentional. That's intentional. That's an intentional hit. He'll hit you on purpose. So we worked. We worked all summer. And then at the end of the summer, we drove down to our neighbor's, our friend's house, and we turned on some Eye of the Tiger. Eye of the Tiger. Um I was in the back of the ranger. Yep. And I'll be dang if he didn't work.
SPEAKER_01He made it. You got it over the house. So the goal actually was to get it over the house. And we worked all the time.
SPEAKER_00Now, Budge, I'm gonna tell you right now. In my office, as we speak, I took that tennis ball after I victoriously hocked it over the house. Heroically, thank you. That's actually a better word, heroically. Threw it over the house. I grabbed the ball, I signed the ball, I dated the ball, and then I went down to Hobby Lobby and I purchased a trophy case. It's in a case and it sits on the back of you know my desk is here and there's a createnza back there. And a lot of times clients occasionally will just, you know, out of small chatter like, oh, is that you know, did you win that at some point? Yeah, did you catch that at some tennis match? And I just simply respond, it's just a very important piece of sports memorabilia in my life. Yeah, I threw it over at that.
SPEAKER_03It's a big thing. Leave that part out.
SPEAKER_00There's a picture of my wife, there's the ball, and then there's a nice little note from my dad that I've got framed. I mean, those are the three things that are just, you know, on my credentials. Important things of the life. Can we go back for one minute to grandma's? Please. Um because so your sweet grandmother. Are are you do you have grandparents that are still with us, budge? No. Okay, neither do I. But we have these wonderful memories, right? And my my my grandmother um was on my mom's side 100% Belgian.
SPEAKER_02Oh.
SPEAKER_00She was from Belgium, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Not pre-occupied Belgian.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, she grew up in World War II. I mean, this is she's legit. She's a tough woman. Big, beautiful Belgian woman. Uh, and I thank her. Because of her, I'm one quarter Belgian, and I'm grateful for that. And I let everybody who knows me know that. Yeah. We were uh I was in college and I was at her house for some reason, multi-ed Goatrojans. Um, a referee high go trojan. Yes. And um we were in the utility room, kind of a low ceiling, kind of like here with the duct coming down, but I it was even lower than this. There's a huge spider on the ceiling. I swear it was like the size of my hand, but I you know. Right. You know, it was big anyway. It was big enough. And my grandmother said in her thick French accent, she's like, Jason, kill that spider. And I was going to, guys. I mean, of course I was going to. I was gonna I was gonna be the hero here. I just this was not an unfair request. I said, hey, of course, grandma, could you grab me a shoe or something? And she looked at me, and all the while keeping eye contact, she took her full Belgian thumb and just squished that spider right into the ceiling, and while she's looking me in the eye, she says, panty waist. Oh my goodness.
SPEAKER_02Did you laugh at that point?
SPEAKER_00Oh yeah, we all she brought the house down.
SPEAKER_02She brought it up. But you still felt like a little bit of a heel.
SPEAKER_00Well, I mean, yeah, I mean, I'm like, my grandma just called me a pantywaist. From my mom, you know what I mean? Your mom was about, yeah. Yeah, yeah, I see it. You're like, sorry, mom, I did the best I could. That's what she said to her mom. So I didn't mean to just jump all over there, but um River Heights is small, and and he obviously you have you have you have spread your wings, budge. You have spread your wings. Spread the wings.
SPEAKER_01Been outside of River Heights now more than I grew up in River Heights. Do you miss it at all? Coming back to River Heights? I do miss it, yeah. I miss the small town, the quietness of it, yeah, absolutely.
SPEAKER_02We had some so Scott and I we met younger. Because I have pictures of us playing the same little league football team. But we really didn't know each other. That ninth grade is when we started. We just connected. Yep. Really doing stuff together, and we had some times. There was time. Can we get into some of your accidents? It depends.
SPEAKER_00Well, we started with a BB gun wound. I don't even know where we go from there, but I deny him all ears.
SPEAKER_02I don't know. You see, if I was to w watch kids now as a 46-year-old man and watch them do some of the stuff we did, I'd be like, idiots. What are they doing? Yeah, for sure. So like the time you fell out of the back of the truck. Let's talk about that. Right. You're standing up in the back of Kevin Water's truck. Yep. This is also statue of limitations. Driving through River Ice. Yes, Statue of Limitations.
SPEAKER_00And can we can you give me an age?
SPEAKER_02Well, we were in high school, 16, 17.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it was the evening of responding to a dance invitation at the school. Yeah. We were coming back because we were gonna go to your house to watch movies.
SPEAKER_00The story's got everything action, romance. Yeah, so I'm in the back of Buffalo.
SPEAKER_01I'm in the back of the truck with my girlfriend now wife. And yeah, so we're we're riding in the back. Were you in the back with this? I was up front up front with Kevin. Anyways. Anyway, we're driving through late at night, driving through River Heights. Kevin's thinking he's funny. And he's hitting the gas and he's hitting the brakes and hitting the gas. We're in the back, you know, bouncing around like babies in a box for crying out loud. So I think, oh, I'm gonna be all cool. And I stand up and get up to go confront him, and I'm hanging over the edge, or if we're driving, I'm thinking the vehicle.
SPEAKER_02And I start hitting Kevin through the through the window, the driver's side. Okay, now we gotta pause here. Okay. Now that's not gonna do anybody any good when you're hitting, you're actually slugging the driver.
SPEAKER_00The driver, exactly. I've seen this in the movies, it doesn't end well. Well, at no, so I'm not thinking clearly, obviously, as a teenager.
SPEAKER_02But the thing is, is now you're thinking that's your left arm. You can just get one.
SPEAKER_01And I think I got some good ones in. Glad to ask him. Blood in his nose. Exactly. So thinking I'm funny. So anyway, Kevin, after getting hit, he just takes a hard right. Spins the wheel. He did crank it. I lost my balance and I flew over the edge, landed on my head on the concrete, broke my toe. Did you break the toe? Oh, broke the toe. Yeah, ripped my San Francisco Giants hat, ripped the hole right through, took the skin off the top of my head.
SPEAKER_02That hat saved your life that night.
SPEAKER_01It did. Did you head over to Fred?
SPEAKER_02What's his name?
SPEAKER_01He wouldn't help you. You couldn't help us on that one. So I blacked out. I said a few words I shouldn't have because I woke up. You know, I cursed, I said some words. Mom, I said some words. Listen, we've we've all been there. We've all said some things. He's thought them. I make him read them all the time, but whatever. So anyway, I get up, we get in the back of the truck, head back up to Dave's. You know, I'm trying to be cool. I'm good. I'm fine. I have no skin on my hands. You know, like I yeah, I'm good, I'm all riding, no problem. We get up to Dave's. I say, I gotta go to the bathroom, I walk into the restroom, take my giant's hat off, and my head just swells up. I just like a giant softball under my under my skin. So they wrap it in in a towel.
SPEAKER_04You did? Yes. We mummified you.
SPEAKER_01I know, it's like a mummy. Drive me back to my parents. My parents are in bed, and we go walking in, they're laying in bed because it's late. Kevin Blotter's feeling terrible. The poor guy. I felt bad for him.
SPEAKER_02I look at the moment, I was a little upset with Kev. I I'd probably tell him to this day. Okay. Why would you crank the wheel like that when a man is standing up in the back of a truck? Because he was being hit. Yeah, he was being attacked. You know what? I'd never realized that he was being beat. And I got a couple of good ones. Yeah, you did get a couple of good ones.
SPEAKER_01So get into the into the house, we walk into a parent's uh bedroom. Kevin's in there uh and says something to me, you know, Mrs. Butch, there's been an accident.
SPEAKER_03You know, and he's all nervous. And so I take the towel off my head. It's just, you know, I look at the ball. This feels like almost like a Harry Potter thing.
SPEAKER_01So anyway, she tells you, she runs me to the hospital.
SPEAKER_02You had to be concussive. You had to go.
SPEAKER_01You you I'm sure it was concussive. Well, I I ended up having to wear a neck brace, and my head was all swollen, ended up having pressure in my head and headaches, and it was an ordeal. You know, you wouldn't know. You wouldn't know it today. Wait, this was before the dance? This was before the dance, because responding to the invitation. Yeah, it was a girl's choice. This is just responding, yes. This wasn't the night of the dance. No. Ended up going to the dance, had black eyes and everything. But before that, you know, I didn't want to go to school because I looked just like a halibut. You know, half my head on one side, but two eyes on the other. So I used a paper bag and I cut holes in the floor.
SPEAKER_02Is that why you had to tell him about the paper bag?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I put the paper bag on with No, it was because of the I just looked hideous. Because he was that I'd enter the door with just the paper bag and holes and stuff. Bug love day.
SPEAKER_02I just throw him a baby rose and cognizant. Oh my god, like that's next love. Do you think that one's the worst one or the time you toppled down a mountain?
SPEAKER_01Well, that was because of you.
SPEAKER_02What? That was because of- How's that my fault?
SPEAKER_01Because I was down at the bottom of the cliffs, and I see you way up there billy goating without ropes, and I thought, oh, that's pretty cool. Look at Dave up there. I do remember being above. Yeah, so I go climbing and I get all the way up to you.
SPEAKER_02Why would I be able to do that?
SPEAKER_01I know when you were way up there. But you were up there. Okay. And so I billy goated my way up there, and then you jumped across that little ravine. Remember it? Yes, there was that little crevice in the rocks. You know what, buddy? I know Dave logging.
SPEAKER_00He's got a very selective memory.
SPEAKER_01This is 100% true and accurate. Yes. He jumps across this little crevice in the rocks. I reach up, I'm like, that's a little dangerous. I think I'm gonna give it a shot, though. I didn't want to be behind him. So I pull up to get some leverage, and the cliff rock broke off my hand and I went off backwards.
SPEAKER_00This is like a movement. How far did you fall?
SPEAKER_02A long way. He saw it. I was scared. I I was scared because all of a sudden I was. Where were you? Logan Canyon? Yep, Logan Canyon. Card Canyon. I w I watched, because I'm above. I got the high ground and I'm watching him literally cartwheeling down this mountain.
SPEAKER_00There's a phrase that my dad would use, and I don't I mean something over tea kettle? Exactly. Yeah. Bum over tea kettle. There's never an E on our podcast. Yeah, we don't we try not to the family show. We try not to crash.
SPEAKER_02But there was a bum over tea kettle going all the way down. Cartwheeling. Now the scary thing is, is and he didn't. Did you know that cliff was coming? No. He stopped right before a drop-off clip. And that ends in the river.
SPEAKER_01Because I knew the river was coming, so I was doing everything I could to scramble myself. I just you know I'm just going whatever I can. Scrambling.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, scrambling. He stopped right before that cliff. How he stopped, I still don't know. Because that cliff, now we're just thinking about how far is that drop? Oh, I don't know. 2030? Probably. It's a drop.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I knew. Well, me too. But he stopped and broken leg? Snapped leg. Yeah. So we had to. Remember how I told you I was a really good scouter?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you were an A scout.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, one of the best scouters you've ever known.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, obviously you had to be your first aid marriage badge. Well, you saved my life.
SPEAKER_02Well, I don't apparently I'm the one that almost killed you. You're a bad example, but you saved my life. Jason Peter, we did this and carried him out. The fireman carry. All the way out. Yep. Yep. So I had to sit down.
SPEAKER_00Took him to the Arbor ride down, too. Well, I'm glad I took you down because I can kind of see Dave saying, you know what? Um, I just I want to just finish this hike real quick. One last summit that I'd like to summit.
SPEAKER_02I need to say I mean, if you know me at all, I'm not climbing anything. I'm I'm not gonna go hike. No, you're not. No, we're we're so that must have got you that day. Like, well, if he's going up there, might as well go up there.
SPEAKER_00Dave Simmons is up there. Yeah, I can't. This is this is blowing my mind. I mean, we are we're lucky to have him here. We are really lucky to have him here. And it's kind of a little bit on Dave. I mean, I mean you saved him, but yeah, I don't know. It's uh this is a tough relationship, but I'm enjoying every minute of it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, well, that uh that was we we put a lot of wiffle ball growing up.
SPEAKER_04Lots of wiffle ball.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, he he and I were the ones who invented the mystery pitch.
SPEAKER_01We also claim uh do we I used the mystery pitch with some boys in our church at their camp just a few weeks ago. We're gonna need a and it was beautiful.
SPEAKER_02I just don't share the mystery pitch. No.
SPEAKER_00Oh, it's a it's a it's a it's a literal pitch.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, we it's how we throw that ball. Okay.
SPEAKER_00I thought it was some sort of word game you made up.
SPEAKER_02No, it's it's a natural pitch. Like if you've heard of a curveball and a ball and a slider pitch. We have a mystery pitch. TM. Yes, and Butch can throw a reverse mystery pitch equally as well.
SPEAKER_00Did you guys come up to this together? Like did you guys?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, the caboose league we made up.
SPEAKER_00The rise of Fuhrer, all of those pitches. The caboose league. That's like well, that's like the boxcar children. Yeah. It was just T and I. It was just the two of us.
SPEAKER_02Several seasons. Yeah, several. We were probably 22, 23 years old. And we kept our staff.
SPEAKER_00I threw the bat through the windshield of the camper. You were 22, 23 years old, and you formed the caboose league. It was just TI.
SPEAKER_01Okay, but now what did you just say that you just you were Well, I took a big swing and I threw the bat right through the windshield of a camper that was right there on the foul line. Well, he should have been parked there. He should have been parked there. We had to go tell the game.
SPEAKER_00That feels very like um reminiscent of kids these days throwing the the Wii remote through the TV. Yeah, yeah. But ours was real. But yours was a real baseball bat through a real camper with a wiffle ball.
SPEAKER_02Of course, we enhanced it. We used to tape those wiffle ball bats and had to put some chicken wire up through the handle because it couldn't handle the amount of athletic tape we'd put around the. We kept stats. I think I still have the Excel file. Oh, I'd love to see that. I'd like to see that too. I still claim that he and I are going number one and two in the wiffle ball draft if there ever is one. And I claim he's going number one because he threw a perfect game against me one time, and I still don't like to talk about it.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00Although I brought it up. But yeah, and I'd actually like to hear more details. You threw, meaning you threw a perfect game against him. Again, remember that I'm your friend who's not super sports oriented, but as I understand it, you didn't get a hit. Nope. Nor a walk, nor that's tough.
SPEAKER_02That's tough. It was bad. It was one of the highlights of my life. We lost, we lost plenty of wiffle balls to the junkyard dog, too. Yes.
SPEAKER_00Oh, you had a junkyard dog?
SPEAKER_02Well, no. Kind of. Because on the other side of these uh sheds was a junkyard. Well, there was no dog, but we used to call it a junkyard dog.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. But you could you could retrieve the ball if needs be. No, I don't think we could get over that.
SPEAKER_02I don't think we could get over that.
SPEAKER_00Like old man Hennessy's back there.
SPEAKER_01But if it went over there, it was a heck of a hit.
SPEAKER_00It was a good deep home round. You just you just you sacrificed the ball and you were proud of what you did.
SPEAKER_02We would we would do commentating too. Like at the first, well, we'd like to welcome you out to the caboose. It's just the two of us out there. Every time we'd be walking across the parking lot to get or to cross the road to get there, one of us would, wow, we'd like to welcome you out to the caboose link.
SPEAKER_00I just I can't, for the life of me. The part that is maybe the best part of this story is that you were 23 years old. Oh yeah, we were grooming. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01We were well, we both lived in the We were right there, Placial Living.
SPEAKER_00Oh, this is when it wasn't any of Susie's business what you were doing this weekend.
SPEAKER_01That was a rough weekend. Is this the same thing?
SPEAKER_02He had to come over.
SPEAKER_00This was the game controlled.
SPEAKER_02No, we were playing, we were playing FIFA soccer that night.
SPEAKER_00But this was the guy that you were playing video games with. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So I partially blame him just for telling having me stay over too late.
SPEAKER_01I didn't make you say the words to Susie.
SPEAKER_00No, nobody belt. Well, yeah, but um I'm enjoying this. I like to sit as judge jury at execution here. I'm like, yeah, but you all you actually hold just a tiny little bit of uh responsibility for this. Thank you.
SPEAKER_02I need somebody else to take some of the else.
SPEAKER_01And it was some good times, without a doubt.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01But listen, you know, there was many a jazz game that I had to go over to watch the playoffs, and it was just me and Susie out there drilling on the grill because somebody's on the golf course.
SPEAKER_02Oh, what? It wasn't over. My round wasn't over, and he was there ready for the jazz to start. Now remember, this is we had plans, the jazz game started. This is big time. Yeah. Budge and I drove down to down to meet him at Millionaire Turin. Exactly. So this was huge.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, this was we had plans, you know, get together, we watched every game together, you know, and sure enough, I couldn't get him off the golf course. And I just find myself over there grilling up. Susie and Budge grilling up on easy.
SPEAKER_00Well, I that is that is so surprising to me because again, I know you love for the jazz. I know. This was a big time.
SPEAKER_02I know. It's just not easy to get off a golf course and get where you need to be. If you're out there on number eight, yeah, what do you do? Just leave? I think so.
SPEAKER_03I don't think that's what I say.
SPEAKER_02Sorry, I'd like to formally apologize for that. Yeah. Apologies, exactly. Okay, thank you.
SPEAKER_01Appreciate it. Oh my goodness. Well, what brings you into town for this trip? Here for a family reunion. So I'm going to Bare Bay for the next three uh three days and join the Cache Valley and Utah. You know what they say, it's the Caribbean of the Rockies. It is the bear leg monster. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Bearleg monster.
SPEAKER_01So it's always good to be back though.
SPEAKER_02It is always fun to have the budges come into town. I'll drop most anything for it. For when the budges come in.
SPEAKER_00Listen, again, a little peep behind the curtain, and I love to say this phrase, see how the sausage was made. They've called me literally, well, now we're 33 minutes into this, so let's just, you know, 45 minutes ago and said, Budge is in town. And I said, What? Budge is in town. He said it again.
SPEAKER_02He said, We're dropping a pod tonight. I think I said something like, What are the odds of a guy like you, a girl like me, dropping dropping a pod tonight because Budge is in town? And Jason love him for it.
SPEAKER_00He's like, We're doing this. Let's do it. Let's get it done. Let's get it done. And we and we're crushing it. Um, in fact, I if I may be so bold, I think we have got a lot more to talk about. Do you have time to stick around for a little longer? You bet I do. Alright, guys, we'll just get excited just because there is more. We're gonna have to really take a note here. This is episode one, and we usually try not to timestamp these so specifically. Episode one, but there's a lot more where this came from.
SPEAKER_02Thanks again, folks, for listening to another episode of the Small Towns Podcast. We're pretty sure we've changed your life for the better. If not, well, we'll try again next time.
