How many Halloween movies are there? Tons! So we thought we could do a Halloween Pod Part II. Besides, everyone knows that the sequels are always better… Dave HAS put on face paint before… he didn’t like it then, he doesn't like it now. And all Jason wants is a delicious puffed rice ball from sweet Naomi for Halloween…
Welcome millions upon millions, perhaps billions, of faithful podcast listeners. We are your hosts, Jason Kimber and Dave Simmons. We'll bring you along with us as we share life stories from our experiences living in small towns, or in Jason's case, an unincorporated community. That's true. Along with genius suggestions for solving world problems and a whole lot of laughs. This is the Small Towns Podcast. Ladies and gentlemen, good evening to what is sure to be yet another great podcast. I forget the number that we're on, Dave, but uh uh we've been doing this a long time. Again, Jason Kimber, uh, as always with the incomparable, oh we say that a lot, but David Mark Simmons. Thank you. Thank you. I think this is episode 46. Episode 46, you're exactly right. Because we just, if you hopefully again, we don't like to timestamp these things, but we are going to release this one next because it's it timing with what's going on in the world right now. Uh in real world, just holidays, things of that nature.
SPEAKER_00Well, and to our loyal listeners, we know that there was a decent gap there for a few months. Yeah, we're we're sorry. No, but hey, we needed a summer vacation.
SPEAKER_01We yeah, the only type of shows, every show has a break unless you're like a soap opera. Yeah, and look, we're not really a soap opera, but but yeah, we just needed a couple of months.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we just it was like um I got accosted through those months of people saying, Hey, where are the episodes? Drop a pod. Drop a pod, and you know, we needed a little time.
SPEAKER_01All right. The fans know what they want. Um, but you will remember from some of our last our last two episodes, we had a special guest, and and I I love it when we have guests, it's fun. Um, we see a little bit of a different flavor, different feel. Obviously, you and Scott grew up together, yeah.
SPEAKER_00And you get you get a feel for um my relationship with other people, and I I'd like for to you for you to have some other your people. It feels like we've always had my people.
SPEAKER_01Well, yeah, but oh it does feel a little bit like that. Um, but I've got a few uh we need those. Yeah, so we'll get stay tuned, ladies and gentlemen. It's gonna be great. I'll go ahead and drop the name first right off the bat on the top of my list, and he's ready, Curtis Kimber. Yeah, cousin Mose. Exactly. I don't I he's ready? You've talked to him? Oh, yeah, he's ready. He's I mean, I think we just need to schedule a time that works for him. In studio, though. Yeah, for sure, in studio. And he's got like five kids that are busy ages, but he needs to be in the studio. This is not a phone call.
SPEAKER_00No, I completely agree. I thought it worked way better with Budge when he was in studio. Absolutely.
SPEAKER_01And I think even from uh a sound perspective, it sounded better. He was good. But it's something, this may be uh an appropriate segue, Dave, but but one thing that I want to talk about, as I was re-listening, um, you know, the process of how we do these. We record them, we never edit. Never, we never edit for better or for worse. For better or for worse. Um, but then you know I go through and I pick some catchphrases that we like, and that's how we post them to our social media. Now, uh, you do not know that I'm gonna bring this up, but the the last budge, budge part two. Yeah, you mentioned something about a school talent show, and you mentioned something that you correct me if I'm wrong, that you dressed up as Twisted Sister with face paint.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_01Now, listen, folks, first, all of our loyal listeners, pick your jaws up off the floor, sit down, because we're gonna talk about this because we are in the month of October. All of our loyal listeners knows how Dave feels about the holiday, Halloween.
SPEAKER_00And if you don't, let me suggest that you go back to episode seven. Yeah. I laid it all out to the world. Yes. I have, I have, it hasn't been like formally diagnosed in like with a shrink or anything. Well, but this feels kind of like therapy. Look, I'm I'm in a recliner right now. I might as well be on a couch because I need you to help me get through this. I have masculophobia. I suffer from it. It's it's real for me. It's a well, masculine.
SPEAKER_01It's real it's real. Mascophobia is a thing. It is a thing. Look it up, folks. I had to Google it myself because I thought that it was not a thing. But then as soon as as soon as you said it, there was times when I was a kid I had masculophobia. My brother, I think we talked about it that very episode. My brother had a Gene Simmons kiss mask. Oh my god. Scared me to say.
SPEAKER_00So did my uncle. My uncle Lynn. Uncle Lynn. Well, of course he did. Yeah, he had a he had I think he still wears it just for fun.
SPEAKER_01He probably, he's a DJ, so he probably wears it on the air. On the air.
SPEAKER_00He just tells people, I got my Gene Simmons mask on today.
SPEAKER_01And you'll remember my mom took that mask after one too many scares by my older brother Wade. Now I love Wade, but he traumatized me, and I can still remember that day when my mom took that plastic mask, opened up our wood-burning stove, smell be danged. She threw that plastic mask in there and burned it. Yes, thank you, Betty.
SPEAKER_00That's the greatest thing Betty Betty Kimber's ever done. Oh, I'm born you.
SPEAKER_01And she born me.
SPEAKER_00But so so again, you you do not like Halloween. No, and we're coming up on it. It's coming quick. It it honestly is the worst day of the year for me.
SPEAKER_01I I give us a refresh. Why, why is like, why is it the worst day and what do you do on that day?
SPEAKER_00I don't know. There must have been something that scarred me. And there are many things, and and in my head, I try to go back and think, what was it? I know that there were some middle-aged men as little kids were trick-or-treating around town. They were trying to scare everybody. Um, I stopped trick-or-treating in the fourth grade. My my I asked my dad, and I'm like, I don't want to do this, so we went down to the local rec center and played some vat basketball and some racquetball and just had a good evening. Um, but I remember smells, like it, there's a smell to Halloween that makes me nauseous every year. Really? Yeah, I see face paint and it makes me kind of boil inside. Like I get angry about it. You get angry about it. I do. I like have you seen those this year's, they're new, those skeletons that have got to be like 20 feet tall. Yeah, huge. Yeah, our yes, we've got some in our neighborhood. People have to be spending hundreds of dollars on those things. I would assume. I can't think of a hey, I'm I'm not gonna offend some people here. You might. But it's just my personal opinion. Sure, and I can't think of a phone. Oh, yeah, but have your own punkhead. I can't think of a worse way to spend your money. There has to be a better place to when I see those things. I honestly all I want to do is sweep the leg. I just want to sweep the leg. No mercy, Jason. I want to sweep the leg of every one of those things and just watch it go down.
SPEAKER_01And then all of a sudden he looks at me and he says, Do you have a problem with that? No sense I'll sense I no mercy. First of all, every single one of you better know that that was from Karate Kid. Yeah, I I mean we get some fish. Everybody.
SPEAKER_00I had to show Ollie the my 12-year-old the other night because we drove by those and he's a good kid. He like tries to shield my eyes for me. I don't even want to look at him. Yeah. And he goes, and I said, I just want to sweep the leg. And he's like, What? And I played that for him and it makes good sense.
SPEAKER_01I can see you actually stealthy, I'm being out there and just kind of doing the sweep. Kick the leg out from underneath that thing and watch it topple all over. You think of that. Every time I see that, without question, the song pops into my head. The leg bones connected to the knee, thigh bones. It's all going down if you sweep the leg. I saw a Halloween display in the valley. I can't tell you exactly where where it was. It was on one of Heather and I's normal Saturday drives, so I should be able to find it. We you know, we get the McDonald's, we get the Coke, sausage egg, muffin, take a little bit.
SPEAKER_00It's a whole Saturday thing for you.
SPEAKER_01It's a thing, yeah, absolutely. And I saw a house that had, I'm not kidding, five of those? And it looked as if Over in River Heights.
SPEAKER_00Is that where it is? Yeah, we have to drive by it by soccer for soccer practice. Now, look, guys, when I say I would like to sweep the leg, I'm not gonna do it. No, no, no. So, like if like somebody, if some of those get started knocked down around town, it's not you, it's not me. I'm not I'm a grown man, I'm not gonna go out and vandalize. He wants to sweep the proverbial leg of Halloween. Yes, the whole leg would go down, the whole thing would go down in a blaze of the stuff. But it's scary, like there's five of them, it looks like they're marching to somewhere. I know, and their eyes light up. They do? Yeah. I've only seen it in daytime. Let me ask you this, Jason. Yeah. What is the appeal to Halloween for people? Uh I mean, you don't you're not adverse to it, right?
SPEAKER_01No, I'm not adverse to it, but I I know people who love it as much as they love as much as I love Christmas. Yes.
SPEAKER_00So so they're ha I I need to just understand what in the world are they thinking?
SPEAKER_01Let's create a pro and con list. I'm gonna start first with the obvious pro, candy. As a kid, free candy.
SPEAKER_00Okay, I'll I'll I'll give you that. Okay. Because but the thing is, is you can get that candy any other day of the year.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but you cannot get the the the breadth and the depth of the selection. The variety that's a better word, the variety.
SPEAKER_00Can't you? Just because the packaging on your Snickers has a trunk in on it? No, no, no, you're you can still get the Snickers.
SPEAKER_01Listen, but in one night, at no cost to me, I can get, if I'm lucky, an old hen old Henry bar, Snickers, Milky Way, uh, maybe Kit Kat throwing Arisas, maybe some sixlets. Okay, that's garbage. Well, you might even get like a popcorn bobby.
SPEAKER_00You want one of Susie's uh circus peanuts too with it?
SPEAKER_01Don't be there being ridiculous. That is garbage candy, but you there is so much good candy. Like, if I I couldn't just go out and buy, like, you know how much it would cost me if I had to buy you first of all, you can't buy this the snack size, the little the fun size, they call it now. You can't just buy those individually.
SPEAKER_00Okay, let me ask you this. Now I know I know that you're not a child, and for a child, it doesn't sure they're gonna go out and they're gonna gather it all up, and it's a great night for them. Yeah, but if you had to go out and gather that candy now, it's gonna take you hours. Yeah, I wouldn't do it.
SPEAKER_01Might as well just go buy it. Just go buy it, and and I I would, it'd be worth buying it because for sure, for every for every delicious Snickers I'm gonna get, somebody's gonna sneak in a nasty three musketeers.
SPEAKER_00Ugh.
SPEAKER_01I don't care for three musketeers either. I'd eat it. I mean I mean if it's the last one in, I'm for sure going to eat it.
SPEAKER_00But there are I wouldn't eat sixlets if there's last one? No. That's no. That's not worth any that's not even worth opening the little what is that blast. It's like a little sleeve. Yeah. You just would you eat um fun dip? Or or what what do they call the the sugar in the little straw looking thing?
SPEAKER_01Uh pixie sticks.
SPEAKER_00Pixie stick would you eat one of them?
SPEAKER_01Oh, for sure I'd eat a pixie stick. Right now? Right this minute. Let me tell you what I'd do. I'd rip the top off and then being very careful as to not gum up the open end with my saliva because then it gets all gummy. Yeah. You you hold your mouth open and you pour that between your cheek and your teeth. So you get it. It's like it feels like chewing tobacco. I so I have been told. And and you just you just dump it in there and then let that goodness, that sugar, just kind of percolate into your insides.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's basically chaw. I mean, you're basically cutting little little dude Yeah, you're you're injecting sugar directly into this bloodstream.
SPEAKER_01Have you ever had, let me ask you this right now, if you had a packet of Pop Rocks right this minute, do you know what I'm talking about? Oh, I know what you're talking about. Would you would you eat them? No.
SPEAKER_00Oh that's a waste of my time. Oh, it's a party in your mouth. So's a burger.
SPEAKER_01Oh well, listen, we talked about that with Budge. We talked about the double cheese. Of course it is. But I also growing up, like you say, you you have these these smells of Halloween, but I have the smells of like carameled apples, candied apples, maybe a maybe a caramel popcorn ball, maybe some and you associate that in your mind with Halloween.
SPEAKER_00With Halloween, with the fall.
SPEAKER_01Well, you got me there, my friend.
SPEAKER_00But that's why I've tried to just create my own holiday called Falladay.
SPEAKER_01Fall a day.
SPEAKER_00And we talked about that in episode seven of seven. I just I don't want the the costumes. I don't want the the gore, I don't want any of that stuff. Just let's celebrate the changing of the seasons. Because I do love this weather right now.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, this is hands down my favorite time of year. Um, and for all of you naysayers out there that's saying, are they doing are they seriously gonna do another podcast on Halloween? Of course we are. We'll probably do one every year. First of all, Jamie Lee Curtis, there's like 17 Halloween movies.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So it's fine.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's gonna be fine.
SPEAKER_01And that's the thing that I can't do. Like I used to love scary movies, so that's why I kind of laugh. You still go to scary movies. I do, I do sometimes still go, but I went to one the other night and it was so scary.
SPEAKER_00I just I don't understand that for a second.
SPEAKER_01We are gonna have that on another podcast. I think we mentioned it last time, but things that I'd never do again, and I'm gonna just do a little spoiler alert here. I will I mean I'm probably gonna go back on this, but for this moment, I'm never gonna go to a scary movie at nighttime anymore. Really? I maybe a matinee, yes, but to come out of a theater from a scary movie into darkness, into a dark truck with somebody could be in the back, it's very scary.
SPEAKER_00And did you know, folks, that Jason can't have a closed shower curtain? It's true, and I don't think it's that big of a deal. I think it's a little weird, but then again, I've never seen the movie.
SPEAKER_01Is it psycho or psycho with Norman Bates?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I've never seen it.
SPEAKER_01Well, that's not a surprise to me, but yeah. I'm not gonna put myself through that. I don't want anybody there, could be uh an intruder behind the shower curtain, Dave.
SPEAKER_00So yeah, why why put yourself through those things to now put that image in your head, like, well, now I can't even go into the bathroom with there being a closed shower curtain.
SPEAKER_01I know I can't. If I go into the bathroom, if I go into your bathroom, and if if there's a shower curtain in that bathroom, I'm for sure. I don't know if I will open it and leave it open. I prefer that, but I will at least take a peek behind it.
SPEAKER_00Well, that's I don't like to hear that because I think there's probably schmutz in the shower in most in most people's showers and shubs.
SPEAKER_01There very well could be. I have no doubt there's plenty of schmutz. Yeah, without question there's schmutz in it. But better schmutz than a burglar.
SPEAKER_00Okay. Well, Ed then that's on you. Yeah. I've tried to protect you from any schmutz that might be in my shub.
SPEAKER_01I'm not even gonna comment about it if there is in there. I I would just I'm gonna be grateful that it's a safe zone shower so that I'm fine because it's gonna murder. Think of this. If somebody is going to jump out behind you, like jump out to grab you from behind a shower curtain, would you rather be ready, like at the ready, like ready to sweep the leg, or would you rather be in the middle of going to the bathroom?
SPEAKER_00Well, that's a good point. Yeah. I mean, you're you're in a compromised situation if you're trying to go to the bathroom.
SPEAKER_01First of all, I need to uh this is probably too much, and and I don't want your mom to be upset about us always talking about going to the bathroom. But I, unless it was an absolute emergency, I would never go number two in your bathroom. So I wouldn't be that compromised.
SPEAKER_00I appreciate that. I appreciate that.
SPEAKER_01I always because we live close enough that.
SPEAKER_00I'll try to go home.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I'd go home.
SPEAKER_00Even in my professional life.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Uh I'll go home. I try to, I try to. I'm just more comfortable, but sorry, that's neither here nor there. And it may be because I'm afraid of shower curtains, closed shower curtains. Now, in our master bathroom upstairs, all glass. So there is no shower curtain that anybody can be hiding behind. Let me tell you an experience that happened today that I think somewhat relates to Halloween and also to the fact of a closed shower curtain. I was in my office, we have kind of a common hallway area, some stairs come up, and I heard a guy said, Hello, and I thought, well, for sure, he's talking to me, but I was just finishing up a phone call. But then he didn't poke his head in my office, my door was open. So I'm like, where did this guy go? So I stand up, I walk out into the hallway, I don't see anybody. I look down the stairs, there's a door that you can close to not go down the stairs, and I can see that the door is not all the way open, you know what I mean? Like it's not all the way resting against the wall. And I freak out a little bit. And I kind of peek between between the crack, you know where the hinges?
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01There's something back there. And for a split second, Dave, I'm sorry, I'm this is a safe zone, I'm happy to confess my irrational fears. I panicked. I'm like, there's a guy, he said hello, got no response. He's hiding behind the door. I freaked out a little bit, and you know, I didn't look behind the door, I just smashed the door into the wall. I was gonna be ready, and it was just a ladder. Some there's some painters working in the building, and they left a ladder behind the door. First of all, shame on them.
SPEAKER_00Scared me. Yeah, let me ask you this. Yeah. Somebody else hello.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00No response. Yeah. So you look out there.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Say the guy was dressed as a clown.
SPEAKER_01Oh, no.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, see what I mean?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I know.
SPEAKER_00You're gonna run into that on Halloween. I know. You are. People are just gonna be dressed up as weird stuff. I don't understand it a bit. And and and worse, let's say Halloween falls on a Saturday or Sunday. Okay. Why do you have to feel the obligation to dress up on a Friday? It's not even the day. It's not even the day. So I better dress up. Somebody's gotta see me dressed up. I better dress up.
SPEAKER_01I better dress up at work. Yeah. No, they don't. I dressed up as a pirate one time when I was a grown man at work. That's on you. I know. Shame on me. Yeah. But I have such fond memories. Like, for instance, Grouse Crick going trick-or-treating. I'm talking. I really need to uh like track the miles on this, but I'm gonna say at least 30, 40 mile round trip. You know, we'd start down to uh Curtis's. He lived in the far south end of the valley, 12 miles south of me. You did this, did you trick-or-treat this way? Oh yeah, and my mom, of course, would drive us, you know what I mean? Like, I'm not going door to door. You know, because uh total, maybe 50.
SPEAKER_00Not worth it.
SPEAKER_01Oh, buddy, it was for sure worth it.
SPEAKER_00You go down to the co-op, you get you get plenty of candy.
SPEAKER_01Let me tell you what they let me tell you what they didn't have at the co-op. They didn't have a delicious popcorn ball treat that could smell sweet that Naomi made from scratch. From and it was like it was like a puffed rice. Now let me ask you this. So good.
SPEAKER_00Say you went with your kids down the road right here. Yeah, and somebody handed out a homemade, no, a homemade chu popcorn ball. It's garbage, right?
SPEAKER_01It's garbage, different times, different times. I would not straighten the garbage. Well, not in the 80s. In Grouse Crick, it's not. I mean, if you're getting, I remember going one place, you'd get actually a carameled apple. And a cigarette.
SPEAKER_00I'm gonna give you a caramel apple and a cigarette. You choose which one you're gonna want.
SPEAKER_01I'm taking the carmeled apple. Although you can't the problem with that is you can't really put the carameled apple in the bag. Yeah. I mean, because then your stickers and everything sticking to it. So you just eat that on the way.
SPEAKER_00And sell the cigarette at school.
SPEAKER_01The candy cigarettes. We mentioned on our last podcast the uh the sig newtons. I remember I saw a meme about that. It was like, we're talking about the candy cigarettes, but this was actually a fig newton that was in the shape of a cigarette. They called Sig Newton.
SPEAKER_00It's clever.
SPEAKER_01It's clever. Um, but isn't there, I mean, I know you're not a kid anymore, but I'm trying to think of why I like Halloween still.
SPEAKER_00Like Yeah, I'd like somebody to give me a valid reason. It don't tell me because of the costumes, that's not valid in my mind. No, it might be to other people. It could be, it's fun.
SPEAKER_01Like, I think Teresa, our friend Teresa, I think she loves to dress up.
unknownWhat?
SPEAKER_00I mean, it is Teresa. It is Teresa.
SPEAKER_01Remember one time years ago. But that doesn't surprise me at all. She and TJ dressed up as you and Susie. Wasn't that, or was it? It was Cray and Jenny dressed up as you and Susie. Yeah, yeah. Which they won the, they won, they won Halloween that year. They were fantastic. They were beautiful people. They're beautiful people. Um my girls, particularly uh Kate, my younger, she loves to dress up, so it's fun. So maybe I like it because the kids like it. I do like handing out candy at night. You do? I like handing it out. And I'm not gonna be that guy. I hated the houses as a kid that you knew that they were gonna scare you. I didn't like to be scared. No. Remember one time we went to this one house, um, it was my best friend Kenny and his older sister, whom I love dearly. A little shout out to Marty. I think she's a listener. I remember one time she was like in some old clothes, but she looked and she was kind of leaned up against a tree, and so she kind of looked like she she said some straw coming up. Yeah, like a like a like she's a scarecrow. Scarecrow. But she had a mask on, and her eyes would move. So, like, I'm walking to the door, but I got one eye on the door of sheer deliciousness and treats, and one eye on what I think is a stuffed scarecrow, but its eyes are moving. Sure enough, we got the candy, and she just jumped like just ran to the truck. And is that fun for you? Well, no, it's not fun, but I I I spook easily, as you know that.
SPEAKER_00Well, that's the why put yourself in those situations. I I mean, maybe, maybe I'm getting I'm thinking people crave that adrenaline that being scared gives them. Else, why would you go to a scary movie? Yeah, that's why would you put yourself in a situation? So, really, what I think it comes down to is people enjoy the feeling of being scared, which blows my mind.
SPEAKER_01It is kind of, but there's gotta be some endorphins or something in there. That's what I mean. The the last scary movie that I watched, can't remember what it's called. I got I know that we're not on camera, but picture this. I I watched it through my fingers, like like this. You're you're you're a grown man watching through your fingers. And if there's gore, I do this. I completely turn away. Sorry, you probably couldn't hear that with this. I put my hand in front of the mic. I turn away because it it scares me. I don't like gore. No, I don't either. I don't like it at all. It's gross.
SPEAKER_00So when people have their face painted with blood and all that stuff, I don't understand that. Even kind of.
SPEAKER_01I think it's it's different in a small town though, because we would have Halloween, and that was definitely one night, but we'd also have like a uh Halloween carnival, like the week or two before it was like a fundraiser for school, yeah. And it was always do it through deer season. We have a bake cell, which was awesome, super fun, and I love that we'd have a cake walk and things of that nature, but we kind of got on this, and I'm not gonna let you escape this because you did put paint face, you put face paint. I did. You put a face on your paint, like Twisted Service. Did you Twisted Sister?
SPEAKER_00Did you have like the bone like on that cover? Here's the here's what it was. It wasn't a talent show or anything, it was for some reason Budge and I and Jason Hansie, we call him we we called him Peter. I know, and he called me Peter. Um we had a a class that was a drama class as seniors in high school, and one of the assignments was to do a lip sync. And so everybody else would bring in like a just a what do we call them back in the day? Baboombox or something. Yeah, yeah. Ghetto blaster, walk in with it on your shoulder. Yeah, they'd come in and they'd have their song, and they would in front of the class do a lip sync. Well, that's that's not gonna fly for us. We're gonna do this thing right. Yeah, go big or go home. And so we would we got Jason had uh a garage that was detached from their home, and upstairs was just basically a big area where they would keep things storage type stuff. Yeah, and he had a drum set that he would he would work on, so we used that. We had a a guitar that didn't have any strings if I remember right, and we needed just a microphone stand at that at that point, so we snuck one out of my church.
SPEAKER_01Now, um snuck one out, yeah.
SPEAKER_00We busted into church, borrowed the microphone stand. Folks don't worry about it. No microphone on it, though.
SPEAKER_01It was just I don't think we had a microphone on it. And don't worry about it, folks, because the statute of limitations is passed.
SPEAKER_00And we took it back. You took it back. Yeah, we just propped the door open and took it back. Um, so we did a Guns N' Roses song, Welcome to the Jungle. Okay, Jason. Do you remember the old video with Axl Rose? Oh, yeah. He had a chest protector on it. Oh, I do remember that. Fortunately for us, Jason used to play catcher. So he had one. He had a chest protector. And uh Budge, Budge had that a big old, a big old uh wig and a top hat and a fake cigarette hanging out of his mouth. He looked just like Slash. Like Slash. But from what we understand, his mom was not happy when she saw the fake cigarette hanging out of his mouth. If it would have been a Sig Newton, she probably would have been followed. Would have been just fine. It's just a cigarette. It's delicious.
SPEAKER_01I have a hard time keep like keeping it in my mouth as soon as I'm biting it. It's delicious.
SPEAKER_00Uh-huh. And then I was on the drum set, but we had to all do one. So we also did um two songs by Twisted Sister. Okay. Well, you you had to you had to put on the face paint. Now, believe me, I'm sure it concerned me.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I was gonna say, how how did they talk you into it? But the show must go on.
SPEAKER_00Well, it must go, and you are, if nothing, a consummate professional. And I was, and so we we got and we did it, and I wanna rock! You know, so we did it. But I remember taking that off and my face was burning. Yeah. And I'm like, never again will I ever do this again. Nothing is worth that, and haven't ever since. Well will I.
SPEAKER_01Well when I heard that for the first time just a little while ago when you said that, it it shocked me even then. And I and I didn't even realize that you were a senior in high school.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we were seniors in high school. So when you were 18.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but I'm proud of you for the show must go off.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you have to, I had to put on a show. Now, if ever someday I land the lead in the music man, yeah, which I mean I'm ready. When everybody needs me, anybody needs me, I'm ready. Harold Hill, right? Yeah, the Harold Hill. Yeah. Um, he's a music man. He's a what? He's a music man, and he sells clarinets to the kids in the town. Yeah, that I could do, I could do that, and I'd probably have to wear makeup for the stage.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, because those those stage lights just they just they just drowned you out. I'm pasty as it is. Well, listen, no, you first of all, you're beautiful. Thank you. Second of all, you gotta have a little rouge on those lips, maybe a little something on the eyes. I don't know.
SPEAKER_00Have you ever talked to a cast member after the show?
SPEAKER_01And you're like, oh, that is caked on it. That's caked, particularly if they're trying to be older, because then they have like these lines.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I don't like it. So, like if I ever had to do that, first of all, I don't I don't think it's gonna happen. I don't have anybody calling me. Actually, I think it will. I don't think people are calling me right now saying, hey, yeah, we got uh the role of Harold Hill and we can't find one person in all of Cash Valley to do it. But you would be perfect, Harold Hill. I'm gonna just throw that out there to the universe. Well, I would do the show. Yeah, of course you would. I would then go to the to the root what is it? The the green room.
SPEAKER_01Is that what they I don't know, that's like where the stars go to wait to go out like into like you know.
SPEAKER_00What's the room where they put the makeup on?
SPEAKER_01I don't know.
SPEAKER_00I don't like we're not versed in that. Yeah, we're not. I would go and clean it all off before meeting my adoring fans and signing autographs.
SPEAKER_01First of all, there's two things that happen. One, we've got to get you in a production of The Music Man, because that'd be fantastic. Is there I don't know that show as well as you do, but I have seen it. Gosh, I want to, I wanna, what role could I play in that? I couldn't be the I couldn't be Marying the Librarian. That would be awkward. That would be very awkward. I just maybe I could just be in the ensemble. I don't know.
SPEAKER_00You would be fantastic in it. Because I would or how about the guys that sing um the there's a quartet?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I really want to be in a play. I want to be, I did it all through high school. I was Adam Pontipe and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. That's so beautiful. That came probably really loud. You just distorted some speakers. I think we you know we see here on the chart here, like it just so I'm sorry. I'm sorry, particularly maybe to some of our older listeners with hearing devices that might have been asleep or dogs.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. You just woke everybody up. But hey, that as far as an audition went, you're in.
SPEAKER_01I mean, like, yeah. So if there is a call for Harold Here or Adam Pontipe, look up for them.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, look for us.
SPEAKER_01We're in the case. It gives me hope that you would put face paint on. And and so again. Not face paint. No, no, no. That would be makeup. Makeup. Because I'm actually with you. Even though I loved Halloween as a kid, I hated face paint. And it stinks. Hated.
SPEAKER_00And you can never get it off. No, it's disgusting. It is the thing. And there's a smell, and I think it all stems back to the smell of the drinking fountains in elementary school. Yes. They stink. And then I get nauseous and I want to barf.
SPEAKER_01Well, guys, listen. I think the assumption would be the main same, the same assumption that we'd come to. The conclusion I should say is that maybe we're just followed a kind of people.
SPEAKER_00I for sure am a follow day kind of guy. But I would like somebody to kindly approach me and say, here's why Halloween is awesome. Now, don't feel bad when I say no, that's not awesome. Because we can all disagree.
SPEAKER_01We can agree to disagree, but I'm afraid that there's not anything that anybody could say that would make you think Halloween is awesome.
SPEAKER_00No, don't tell me pumpkin pie. Don't tell me any of that stuff.
SPEAKER_01I do love some pumpkin pie. But that's Thanksgiving, so we're not to worry about that.
SPEAKER_00It's followed. Thanks again, folks, for listening to another episode of the Small Towns Podcast. We're pretty sure we've changed your life for the better. If not, well, we'll try again next time.
